FCC Issues Violation Notice to Detroit 107.9 FM Translator

Post by EdWalker »

An agent from the Federal Communications Commission’s Enforcement Bureau found a Detroit FM translator to be transmitting at 394% of its authorized transmitting power, while using an antenna that did not match its required directional pattern.

It's good to see enforcement action taken on rules violating translators.

I wonder if Salem's 101.5 still has surprisingly good signal strength in the Livonia area, if ya catch my drift?

I remember going through the radio stations at Stony Creek near 26 Mile and 107.9 was coming in clear as day nearly 40 miles away. Definitely wasn't low wattage.

No wonder it was booming in crystal clear near 15 mile and Utica last Saturday during light tropo. I thought it was just a clear shot signal but wow that is a big violation. I had checked AM 1310 and 107.9 was simulcasting the parent station in real time. Edit: that area does normally recieve a signal, it should have been a fringe signal not a local signal

I wonder if W232CA will get hit? It has been reported within this Buzzboard that the signal makes it into Canada and interferes with CKSY in Windsor and nearby despite coverage maps depicting a sharp null that should cut off any penetration into Canada.

I remember picking this up in Windsor, and not just downtown. 107.9 in Amherstberg was getting destroyed by it unless you were close to the transmitter.

I agree with this. And HD (IBOC) too can go, it was a good concept but just hogs up waaay too much adjacent frequency spectrum when utilized.

This is the fault of the FCC they are the ones that created the great translator invasion of 2003. This should have never happened. This is the second thing that the FCC screwed up on, the first was the Deregulation in 1996. Money talks bullshit walks.

As of this morning it is still booming in here in Windsor. I can witness that this station makes its way all the way into Lasalle and even into the outskirts of Amherstburg infringing on CKBG. I was actually part of the launch of 107.9 the Burg (CKBG). I worked along side of the late Marty Adler to get the station up and running. He was well aware of the translator and was looking into the necessary steps to file appropriate complaints with the FCC, however at the time his health was not good. And sadly a short time later he passed away. I was glad he was around long enough to see his station hit the air. I'm glad they were put on notice...... However I think it's too tame and too little. I think they should be forced off the air until appropriate measures are taken. I mean they blatantly we're breaking the law . Broadcasting way over the allotted power is a H*** No-No.... Also the improper antennas is another. Hopefully this gets corrected sooner than later and the FCC keeps on their ass until it's done.
