Radio Format holes

Can I be honest here? I don't think anyone cares anymore.

With most markets and with most owners, you're gonna get a handful of formats:

Country
Classic rock (or a classic hits catch all)
Jesus
Some form of talk (news or sports)
An urban AC leaning format

Mainstream (active) rock blows, modern country blows, CHR blows and don't even get me started on "standing highhhhhh on a mountainnnnnnn" CCM stuff.

If I really had to pick one, I'd love another rhythmic AC. The world sucks, the country sucks, everybody is on edge, I think it would be great to have something on commercial FM that moves a little bit. When time didn't suck so bad.

Just, please. No more formats with Journey, Queen or Morgan Wallen.

You don’t need 5 K Love stations on your dial?

Where are there 5 K-Love stations on the dial? There is only one that I know of.

You're probably thinking of smile fm and Family Life Radio. I think K Love has their full market signal now but Air 1 is also a possibility.

But my point still stands. There's nothing new under the sun.

But my point still stands. There's nothing new under the sun.

Same here. I wished some or at least one of these CCM stations would have less of a backbone and was basically a jukebox of formats and decades. Rock, pop, urban, southern, old, new, and inbetween. K-Love eras but waaay more expansive. Have a playlist that takes days to cycle through. Probably too much to ask. Same with our larger commercial stations and their tight playlists.


As for Christian music, from my DX setup outside of tropo or E-skip (normal conditions) I recieve the following on conventional analog FM in Rochester Hills:
Smile FM: 90.3, 91.5, 103.9
K-Love: 102.7
Family Life Radio: 93.1
Air1: 105.5, 106.3, 107.1* (107.1 is usually weak)
UCB Radio: 89.3
** I know this is urban gospel but it is still a form of Christian music and is primarily music**
Detroit Praise Network: 98.3, 99.9


Not listing WMUZ 103.5 since they alternate between music and talk/teaching shows.

Doing the math between 11 frequencies I have 6 different feeds of Christian music to listen to, outside of DX conditions. This is just on the antenna, not indoors.

Kinda hard to believe that WMUZ has been Christian since it's first day of broadcast in 1958. Also from 1961 - 1980 WBFG 98.7 which was owned by Trinity Broadcasting had the same type of Christian teaching programs. Both stations had solid advertisers.

I also find it unique in the essence that the callsign WMUZ was started on the FM and quite recently after Crawford's acquisition of 1200 AM (9 years ago) the callsign was shared on AM and FM and the only tweak on FM was the '-FM' suffix. Many stations started out with stations on AM and FM having same callsigns and in most cases the AM and/or FM splits off and goes its own way, with callsign, ownership, format or any/all of these. Locally WNIC and WJLB among others come to mind

Another more recent example of something similar is WMPC AM/FM. WMPC does have a translator for 1230 AM but has recently built fully from the ground up (even the tower) a new FM station on 88.5- WMPC-FM- which airs CCM and Worship music along with some talk and teaching shows geared for a younger audience. 1230 AM/ 106.9 FM airs more traditional music inbetween programs geared toward an older audience. The FM was just built in 2024 but over the air coverage makes it truly a cookie cutter station due to how packed the FM band is and the stations it has to protect from interference. It serves the Davison area primarily and Goodrich secondarily, the transmitter is deep in rural farmland and having low power does not help.

Also, keep in mind WMPC 1230 is also 100 years old this year. Still teaching the Word of God.
