Ignore precedent at your own peril. That's why the executive branch gets more powerful with each administration. Except Biden put that concept on steroids when it comes to executive orders. As did our wonderful governor in the state of Michigan (though her 172 Covid-related EO's - more than any other governor in the nation - were all found to be unconstitutional).

So you can sit there and try to pretend that the Biden presidency never happened and/or is irrelevant to the way the Trump administration is behaving, but that's a rather naive way of looking at Presidential power and politics.
Rate This wrote: Sun Feb 09, 2025 9:15 am Unfortunately the damage done under Trump V1.0 necessitated more desperate measures than average. It’s not about the number or even whether they do it or not. It’s about the content of the orders.
That's an entirely subjective take. And the people who put Trump back into power did so because they have the exact same subjective take about the damage done under Joe Biden.

If you want my honest opinion - I'd rather see much of what Trump is doing get done with Congressional approval. I'd also like to see traditional budgets as opposed to constantly being on the edge of government shutdowns and continuing resolutions. But both of those cats are already out of the bag and I'm not sure how you go about putting them back in, if that is at all possible anyways.

The Trump Administration has ordered the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to stop almost all its work basically shutting down an agency created in the wake of the ‘08 recession.

Republicans don't have 60 in the Senate. Unless you're suggesting Republicans should nuke the filibuster.

The Trump-Musk combined effort on reducing WFA waste , fraud and abuse is exactly what H Ross Perot said congress needed to do.

He was famous for sayings as : "open the car hood and get in the engine compartment and fix things."

"Our annual deficit and debt are like the crazy old aunt kept in the attic no one wishes to acknowledge."

Somewhere HRoss Perot (I admired him greatly) is smiling.

And somewhere George W Bush is thinking "this is shock and awe I can get behind, gotta call Cheney"

Are you chicken? Really they don’t have to abolish the filibuster at all. They just have to restore the talking till you can’t anymore Filibuster which is how it was prior to the 1970’s. Now you can declare filibuster and walk away forever.

Democrats had majority the first two years of Biden s term. They did not repeal and replace the egregious Trump tax cuts. They did not need a filibuster proof bill to simply mark up the top bracket from 37% to 39.7 (or higher)%.
In the 2017 TCJA, There were two or three other brackets also lowered, for average folks, like you and I, in the 15-22% tax brackets. Yet all they had to do was to restore that top bracket to 39.7% (or higher), and poof, magic, we have revenue to work with. One number. Could have been part of (filibuster proof) reconciliation act, covid act, build back better, etc. could have been tucked in anywhere. Voted on and approved with their own Democratic majority, even a tie-breaker by Kamala herself!

Imagine the trillions of revenue available for social spending, defense, Medicare, Medicaid, ACA subsidies.

Yet they couldn't lift a pencil or pen to add an amendment to raise all of revenue to reverse the corrosive new debt that the 2017 TCJA piled on.
Dems are now the 'party of the rich' as they failed to fulfill their performative chants of "eat the rich, soak the rich, tax the rich, make the rich pay their fair share,", etc...

Because Dems are also the party of the billionaires.

Therefore the Trump tax cuts, became the Biden tax cuts.

I've scanned the thread and haven't seen anything dome about the bloated defense budget. We can cut shit that helps people because, well, fuck 'em. But things that harm or do no good? Yeahhhhh we'll get to that whenever.

No big deal. Canada abolished its one cent coin a few years ago.

Yes with planning and foresight. They didn’t just wake up one day and decide to not make them.

I'm pretty sure we have enough pennies in circulation that it'll be many years before people begin to notice that there are fewer of them.

Probably so… but at some point it will require a rejiggering of pricing as well as commodities trading and stock trading and a host of other things that use cents. Then there is the question of whether Trump can just decide on his own to end the Penny. Congress had to approve coin designs through legislation. I highly doubt anything but legislation can eliminate a coin.

Having taken 3 seconds to google that last question… this is the latest almost certainly illegal action Trump has taken. You need legislation to abolish the Penny.
