Good move. It will help the team move away from the opener strategy, which was more of an improvisation than a long-term strategy. The relievers said all the right things in public, but I'm sure they would be more comfortable and happier in more traditional roles.

Faedo is reeeeeally not in the plans now. Traded today to the Rays for a 20-year-old minor league catcher.

On 97.1 this morning, Costa and Jansen were hinting that Flaherty developed a good relationship with Chris Fetter last year and that had a lot to do with his desire to return here. Of course, that couldn't have been everything or else Flaherty would have re-signed here sooner. But still....

The Freep reported that Flaherty wanted five years and $100 million from the Dodgers...HA! He got rocked down the stretch and in the playoffs. The Freep also wrote that Flaherty was practically begging the Tigers for a short-term deal after his off-season market dwindled. Apparently the Tigers deal has a player opt-out clause after this coming season. Sounds like a win-win.

The Tigers just traded Alex Faedo to the Rays for a low-A catching prospect.

#18 overall pick (1st round) in 2017. Avila had a penchant for drafting underwhelming pitchers in the 1st round. That said, Faedo is a serviceable bullpen arm. I'm not quite sure why the Tigers dumped him for seemingly little in return.

Edit - good article from clickondetroit.com, which fully answers my question:

And yet another catching prospect enters the organization. Better that than absolutely nothing.

The player option of course favors Flaherty. If he stinks it up this season or is injured, he'll obviously not opt out. Still looks like a good signing.

He has to make at least fifteen starts this year to earn $20 million next year if he opts in. Otherwise he'll make a mere $10 million.

This was a great deal for the Tigers. No ridiculous long term contract. Cobb is the #4 starter on the team, which makes sense.

The cheapskate Tigers were only willing to offer Alex Bregman $28.5 million a year.

The Red Sox signed a contract with him worth $40 million a year for 3 years. Years two and three are a player option meaning he can become a free agent after the 2025 season if he so chooses.

I am unsure he is worthy of quite that much money or flexibility, but the deal the Tigers offered was a joke.

I suspect the dimensions of Fenway were an intangible in favor of his signing with the Sox, too.

Tigers contract was for 6 years though, so actually more money. I hate to defend Illitch, but 40M is a ridiculous overpay for Bregman. Aaron Judge gets 40 million a year.

EDIT: Also hearing that he's probably gonna play 2nd at Boston since they have Devers at third. Had to overpay to get him to switch positions.

Frankly, I'm glad Bregman signed elsewhere. As Honeyman previously opined regarding Flaherty, I have no appetite for ridiculous long-term deals for a player who may well be on the downhill side of a career. Baez anyone?

Besides, what exactly does Bregman bring to the team besides some veteran stability to a position? His actual WAR was hardly better than the combined platoon we utilized at 3B last season.

In other veteran free agent signing news, our new $15 million one-year signing Alex Cobb will miss a month as he injured his hip throwing bullpen before spring training even began! :rolleyes It's expected he'll miss the start of the season.

He’s not worth $40M a year. They overpaid big time, which is why he probably took this 3 year deal. When I heard this last night, I immediately figured he signed it because of the Green Monster as he’ll increase the amount of doubles he’ll hit. Furthermore, we got burned with a similar deal with Baez. $28.5M annually was a fair offer for someone who wasn’t much better than Vierling playing there.

Don't rule out the Tigers signing Justin Turner to a one year deal and sticking him at third. He's better than Jung at this point, especially defensively.

He'd have to get a shave and haircut. :razz I'm not ruling out anything at this point, even old man Turner. I'd still rather have Vierling and whoever else manning the hot corner.
