Evan Petzold made an ominous comment in a Detroit Tigers story in Sunday's Detroit Free Press:

After signing Gleyber Torres, the Tigers moved Colt Keith to first base as the replacement for Spencer Torkelson. As a result, Torkelson is likely to wind up in Triple-A Toledo to start the 2025 season. In his three-year MLB career, Torkelson is a .221 hitter with a .693 OPS across 361 games, spanning 1,469 plate appearances. It seems like the beginning of the end for Torkelson in Detroit — if it's not already over.

With the lack of progress by both Casey Mize and Torkelson, it's very possible that the Tigers will not get much from two 1/1 picks.

Interestingly, the Houston Astros won World Series in 2017 and 2022 after making two bad 1/1 picks:

Torkelson still has some trade value because he’s still young. Mize, not so much. I remember trying to time my visit to Erie when he was absolutely dominant and the next young arm but injuries and then inconsistencies derailed him. He’s likely to get another shot for another team at some point, likely as a reliever. I could see him being released in Spring Training.

I'm not so quick to dismiss Mize, Faedo, and Manning as they all remain on the 40-man roster. I'm also anxious to see how Sawyer Gipson-Long has progressed following Tommy John surgery; he showed some good stuff in his brief stay with the big club a couple years ago.

Players and teams that do not reach an agreement will exchange salary figures at 7pm CT tonight.
