Re: CBS Detroit Swings the Axe
Odds are the station will never have stability or change up the market standings.
Local news viewership is declining not growing.
CBS just went thru layoffs this week with more to come. They’re going cheap at the network news level and starting to cancel 4:30 am and 9am shows. It’s also moving towards solo anchor shows.
Detroit news has been on the air for two years.
It should have some steadiness to it but it doesn’t.
The station also has a PR problem. People in the business know it’s a mess , so why would any top talent go there.
Jennifer Lyons is not the solution. Look at the product in Chicago. It’s like watching paint dry and their ratings are horrific.
CBS stepped in too late to fix Detroit and it is what it is.

Change is slow. People have contracts. Jen Lyons did make some good changes in Chicago. She brought in a strong lead male anchor and chief met. She got the new set and got CBS to invest in reopening the street-side studio.

Why didn't 62 CBS Detroit go out and bring in Christy McDonald when they had the chance? Christy would have been the perfect lead anchor for the station. She is recognizable figure on Detroit TV, a great news anchor, and signed with WDIV right around the time they were launching their hyper-local newscast. It seems like a missed opportunity to not bring in Christy back when they first launched it.

Lyons is a proven winner and already, the production is better.
WWJ is going to turn it around!

Dude.. the issue isnt the “production”. Its everything. They dont have a single strong reporter. They dont have a real set. It looks like a college newscast done from an auto body shop. Their main weather guy looks like Borat.

Newsman123 has good points.
It’s everything.
Shaina Humphries stands out because the rest of the anchor lineup is so weak.
There are H*** issues with producers in that building.
And not one reporter is a standout.
The weather team is all over the place.
It’s a hot mess

The station’s dedication to sports is a joke.I’m a photog and during the Lions playoff games they used the two guys who produce the 6 and 630 shows to report and shoot the games.
What a joke. Was an insult to actual photogs and an embarrassment for the station.

I don’t think the anchors are bad for the most part. The issue was they had producers who honestly didn’t do a good job. Ken Daniels was one of them.
The overall newscasts seem to flow a lot smoother than before.
Overall, while the station still has a ways to go, I am not jumping on the “let’s hate on CBS” bandwagon. I am also not about to bash professional people who are honestly working their butts off.
I think some of the dislike comes across as quite personal.
