U-M leaves Audacy for WCSX & WMGC

Unread post by MWmetalhead »

Wow. Didn't see this one coming. No more U-M athletics on WWJ, WOMC and WXYT A/F.

WCSX will carry nearly all of the broadcasts. Football, men's basketball and even men's hockey. WMGC will be used for overflow and also for a handful of women's basketball contests.

Second shifters might not be happy with the lack of music on WCSX in the evening. This could benefit WLLZ and WOMC.

Major sports organizations have finally come to the realization that being on AM radio is an Achilles heel.

Michigan football has been simulcast on FM (usually 97.1 but sometimes 104.3) for a few years, but basketball was almost always stuck on 950 and hockey was always stuck on the terrible 1270 signal.

Shocked to see this, but then again, Audacy is in financial trouble and not doing well. People who like to listen to Classic rock in the evenings and mainly Saturdays won't be happy. How popular does college hockey tend to be on radio?

Is Doug Karsch employed by both the university and Audacy with his Ticket Show? I know when they moved from WJR to WWJ years ago, many wondered if Frank Beckmann was staying due to him having a show on WJR.

Any chance they flip 105.1 back to all sports with this move?

Audacy having cleansed its balance sheet of excess debt in bankruptcy is in far better financial shape now than Beasley.

One side effect of these changes will be reduced access to football & basketball contests on the radio dial in the Flint area.

950 delivers a good signal to Genesee County 24/7 whereas 94.7's signal strength sucks except in the far southern part of the county. Ditto 102.9.

WTKA (whose AM audio sounds like over modulated trash) is fairly usable during daylight hours but cannot be picked up there at night.

WTRX 1330 carried football contests (and maybe basketball, too?) in recent years but is no longer on the air.

At the end of the day, I like this from a logistical standpoint. I like to know where to tune in if I am unable to watch the game. WWJ, WXYT A/F, WOMC and even WDZH have all rotated games. Having all major teams under one roof is great from a sales and positioning standpoint, but becomes a circus for fans.

Now, I know when I want to listen to a Wolverines game, I'll know where to tune in.

I'm wondering if MSU and U of M will be making numerous phone calls to WRSR over the next few months....

WJR has a good signal (and is fairly well known) in that region, so MSU should be OK.

U-M would've been OK, too, had its broadcasts remained on WWJ.

Would be nice if one of the FMs in the region could pick up U-M football. Definitely not expecting anyone to pick up U-M basketball.

not 'ALWAYS'

as a Big U-M hockey fan, there used to be ZERO Detroit station coverage (not all that long ago) and 1050 is useless east of I-275.

94.7 is so much better than 1270, but that AM station covered a H*** swath of territory that wasn't being served before. I also won't pretend that U-M hockey is some big needle moving sport event......

I think U of M hockey was/is sent to peashooter 1290 when 1050 had/has conflicts. College hockey in general has diehards, but not much general support.

As others have said, Flint is the big hole unless they sign someone up.

Even Lansing has U-M football & basketball on FM! (via Stacks 92.1).

There are plenty of Michigan fans in the Flint area. It would suck if the school fails to find a local station to at least carry football. Bay City's WSGW-FM delivers an even crappier signal to Flint than WCSX.
