9&10 is moving

Unread post by T’Variuness King »

We had a station-wide meeting last week where it was announced that the station is moving to Traverse City. Everyone was in complete shock and blindsided. Those who live in Cadillac including me will now need to drive an hour to work.

As for the building, it going up for sale soon.

Wow. Any idea where they're moving to in TC?

To be honest, 9&10 probably should have always been in TC.

Yeah, what took them so long. Good for 9&10.

But is Cadillac really an hour away from TC? I didn’t think it was that far.

Downtown to Downtown it's about an hour.

Much longer in lousy winter weather conditions.

:eek Wow!

I can't attest to the current cost-of-living differential between Cadillac and Traverse City, but I'd imagine it's still substantial. And driving an hour on M-37 twice a day in the middle of winter can't be a picnic.

Can I assume their transmitter will remain atop "Mt. Dighton", the highest point in the Lower Peninsula?

Not as much a factor anymore, campers and construction really make the summer drive go slowly.

They have a translator on their version of Mt. Wilson. Why would they move the transmitter?

What kind of business would want that building? It's kind of remote.

They should have built the US 131 freeway all the way to Traverse City. And put the airport further out where it doesn't make it necessary to drive around so far to get places.

US 131 has always been about an avenue for a corridor inside of the Lake Michigan shore. There was a "US-131 Association" in decades past who lobbied and pushed for what's there and having the freeway sections get all the way to Petoskey and a merge with US-31 was their pie in the sky goal.

Traverse City doesn't want a freeway, it never has. We are the most economically successful region in the state, and we got here without a stinking freeway.

Flint has 4 freeways and look what a shithole that place is. Stick to your FCC history logs, you don't seem to understand how economic development works.

There will be a point where people just get tired of the traffic jams. When they came up with those plans, they probably had a vision that the world would be like "The Jetsons" or "Back To The Future" and wouldn't need roads, just small personal aircraft.

I saw a Real Estate sign for a development that said "More Traverse, Less City". So everyone doesn't think like that.

There aren't traffic jams on any road coming to Traverse City. They get busy but not like commuter traffic.

The word in our lunch room is that we can’t afford the maintenance of the building, so they want to sell it and move everything to TC. Many people are planning on leaving because they don’t want to drive to TC.

That kind of attrition has accompanied such moves in many industries for decades. You have to wonder.

I hope they aren't planning to dismantle the tower and facility. That would be an incredibly bad idea. I don't see what maintenance on the building could cost that much. Snow removal?
