Billboard Hot 100/American Top 40 Discrepancy

Unread post by Ben Zonia »

I was listening to American Top 40 on the radio today, and was trying to find the actual week that Casey was counting down. The songs were pretty much the same, but the order was different. I kept thinking it was the wrong week. Finally, I found this disclaimer on Top 40 Weekly. I wonder what the reason was? Some kind of dispute between Billboard and Watermark over chart usage, or what?

NOTE: THERE ARE VARIATIONS ON THIS WEEK’S CHART AND THE ACTUAL AT40 PROGRAM. THIS CHART COMPLIES WITH BILLBOARD’S ACTUAL SURVEY FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 29th, 1974.

Once in a while I tune in the SXM 50s channel. More than half the music played isn't from the 50s at all. It's from the 60s and even the 70s.

I sent them an e mail about that once and they replied that the music had all been recorded in the 50s but not released until the 60s. Right! The beatles recorded all their hit songs in 1957 but didn't release them unti 1964.

The most absurd example is Clap For The Wolfman. A parody of 1960s radio, recorded in 1973 but played on the 50s channel.

Casey was away so the shows were pre-recorded in advance, or that's what's explained here.
