Mispronunciation by Jonathan Carlson this morning

Unread post by Victor Victrola »

I've gotten used to "Monroe" pronounced like "Munroe" but this morning JC, while giving a traffic update, identified Moross and Cadieux to sound like "morose" and "cadoo" (as in kazoo). I "get" some of our street pronunciations are difficult, but surely he's heard of these streets before (even if he is not from around here). Have K.T. give him a tutorial please.

We should have always pronounced Monroe like Marilyn Monroe.
Cadieux is difficult to pronounce correctly. Cadyoo is acceptable to me. Where is the G in that name? :lol
Why do we say Lake Or-ee-un instead of Oh-rye-un like the rest of the world?
Why do we say My-lan instead of Mih-lahn?
Why do we say The River Raisin instead of The Raisin River? We're not French and that's where the name came from. We don't say Detroit with a French accent.

The Interwebs can answer all of those.
As to Lake Orion, here's why...

He’s mispronounced many more cities and roads. Examples are escaping my mind at the moment. Unacceptable especially from an all news station in a large market.

Why do people say "Deeeee-troit" and not "Deh-troit?"

I wonder how much influence Mason had on this when the Pistons were good? I know that’s why I do it sometimes.

Hardly anyone from anywhere near Detroit says "DEEEE-troit", but I grew up in Chicago so I did hear that pronounciation a lot. a lot of Canadians turn it into three syllables and say "duh-TROY-it", I've noticed over the years. The old CBC hockey announcer Bob Cole comes to mind.

I thought of him right away before I even finished reading your post. I always thought it was the strangest thing hearing him say that. Didn't know it was a common thing with Canadians.

I once heard a classical music DJ on the old WQRS pronounce Schoenherr in its correct German -- Shern-HAIR, instead of SHAY-ner. I didn't know if he was ignorant or merely being a smart-ass.

My understanding is that the family at some point changed the pronunciation to SHAY-ner.

Don Cherry is another Canadian who pronounces Detroit as such.

Michigan has plenty of these. Someone could easily say Charlotte instead of Char-lot.
