Nick at Nite and TV Land these days SUCK
Nick at Nite and TV Land these days SUCK
I haven't watched either in well over a decade. Out of curiosity, I checked out their schedules.
Nick-at-Nite air a whopping 4 different shows. That's it. 4. Even on weekends.
-Friends
-Mom
-Young Sheldon
-Mike & Molly
==========================================================================
TV Land isn't much better. Their daytime programming consists of 4 shows:
-MASH
-Gunsmoke
-Bonanza
-Andy Griffith
Nighttime? A measly 3 shows:
-Everybody Loves Raymond
-King of Queens
-The Goldbergs
And there are 4 shows confined to weekends:
-Roseanne
-New Adventures of Old Christine
-2 and a Half Men
-The Golden Girls
===========================================================================
Is this a reflection of today's binge-watching culture? Or just being cheap and only paying for the rights to as few programs as possible? They used to have so much more variety in their programming. TV Land as a network even had its own original programming which they discontinued in 2019. And in their first 25 years of existence, they aired roughly 300 different syndicated shows altogether over that span. To see it reduced to this is just sad.

Viacom/Paramount Global has always been the same with their channels. 30-minute shows that run 45 minutes, shows that start at odd times, and excessively long commercial breaks.
TV Land used to be the home for classic TV, but like the oldies format, modernizing programming began in 2007. At least MeTV and Antenna TV do a good job with retro programming.

My lasting memory of Nick at night was watching Mr. Ed and Dobie Gillis back in the 80s. That’s when it was great.stopnswop2 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 23, 2022 10:19 pm Nick at Nite has always aired shows 15-30 year old.

In the 80s and 90s they were not airing shows from the 1940s.
They were airing shows from the 50s-70s.
Now the shows from the 90s and 2000s are that age.

I used to love Nick At Night growing up. Re-runs of Get Smart and Dragnet were nice, Mr.Ed too. During the day, they would show Dennis The Menace(the sitcom).

I believe it was on Nick at Night that I re-discovered Route 66, a show from my early youth whose adult-oriented themes and plotlines simply didn't appeal during its first run.
Great writing, much of it contributed by native Detroiter and series creator Stirling Silliphant; combined with the acting of Martin Milner, George Maharis, and later Glenn Corbett; and that classic theme song by Nelson Riddle; all made for "can't miss" viewing. It's one of the few classic TV series I was compelled to purchase on DVD.

I have to be off work to see it, but WLLA's 64-5 OTA signal in Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo carries RetroTV, which shows both "Naked City" and "Route 66" mid-afternoons, 2-4 p.m., weekdays.
I enjoy the Paul Burke/Harry Bellaver/Horace McMahon NC trio, James Franciscus and John "Eyebrows" McIntire also served well before the setup I described was established.

Recently my dad was talking about getting a new stove because it's been here since 1972.
And I'm thinking to myself that he's just being dramatic because 1972 is only like 20 years ago.
