Wkla AM translator stations

Unread post by hunterw »

Was in the Ludington the other day and was getting static on z93 again and tuned to 92.7 and it’s back on air again, same audio at 106.3. Thought 92.7 was moved to 106.3?

92.7 had to come on in order to keep its license active (it also helps that it blocks Z93's signal in the Ludington area).

John Chickering, and the late Roger Baerwolf did a much better job with these stations.

Was up in the Ludington/Manistee area and both 92.7 and 106.3 are on with WKLA (AM). It makes zero sense to have both running, considering they broadcast from the same site, unless the long term plan is to move one of them toward Manistee.

Ahh, Manistee... I can smell the smelt, and taste the ice cold Schlitz from here :rollin

If Manistee is a "long term plan" then someone needs to tear up the plan and start over.

They should have stuck with WKLA, WWKR, and WKZC. When you add a bunch of other hobbled facilities, you only serve to compete against yourself, and put a drag on the whole operation. I would leave Manistee to someone in Manistee.

Actually, Synergy (who owned WWKR as a standalone at first), bought WMLQ in Manistee from Xavier several years before buying most of the Lake Michigan Broadcasting stations and signing on WLDN at around the same time.

Speaking of hobbled facilities, WKZC likely hasn't run its licensed 17kW in years, WMLQ and WLDN have dead air for hours at a time on weekends, and WKLA (FM) downgraded fairly significantly in 2016/17 and covers much less area than WMOM despite WKLA having a higher ERP at about the same HAAT.

I can't believe WKZC is still around.

IIRC the initial sign-on of the station (in the right-hand side of Zeihm LP Gas store north of Scottville) was on Valentine's Day 1983. All the corn and asparagus in the back yard was having a nice sleep.

I'm guessing (hoping) they've moved the studios since then...

I won a pair of Tigers tickets in the mid 80s for answering a trivia question on WKZC, while I was cutting my on-air teeth in Cadillac.

About the same time, Rob Davidek, who has been running WWJ's newsroom for a couple decades was there, getting himself established in the medium.

Both the studios and tower have moved since then. Its "studios" are on US-10 just east of the hospital. Its tower moved to northern Hamlin Township around (or at) the same time it moved from 95.9 to 94.9. Speaking of the Ziehm LP Gas property, it appears that WMOM's new owners' CP for 99.9 is planned to transmit from that old tower (or very close to it).

WKZC is one of the few stations over 30 years old that has had the same call sign and format since the day it signed on, despite WTCM kicking its a** most of those years.

Went to ludington Friday night and 92.7 is off air. 92.9 was clear till downtown area. 106.3 still repeating 1450 as normal. Wonder what folks listen to along us 10 toward Scottville. Muskegon stations come in ok along with some tc stations. Of course there’s the locals too. 107.9,101.7, 104.5, 106.9 and 105.3 from Muskegon and tc stations 103.5, 95.5, 98.1, 92.9, 101.9(not coming in, currently lower power) and 102.3 from big rapids comes in.

Bumping this, but 97.7 in Manistee was off completely this past weekend when I was up there for the Fourth. Instead, Rewind 97.7 from Sturgeon Bay was in with RDS most of the time.

Both 92.7 and 106.3 were on, along with 94.1, 94.9, 96.3, and 98.7. However, 98.7 remained on the Tigers radio network satellite when they weren't playing.
