This is what the Lions get for refusing to spend $$$ on the defense after Hutchinson got hurt. The playoffs is where a team’s weakness will be exposed.

Daniels did have some spectacular throws. He has to be ROY. No one outside of diehards thought Washington would make it to the conference championship when the season began.

Will this hurt the stock of Johnson and especially Glenn? If both end up going, would you be surprised if the Lions miss the playoffs completely next season?

Their schedule next year is brutal especially on the road. They might win 10 games at best.

If Hutchinson is back at 100% and they have a good draft and free agents sign on D, they can and will win 11 games. I don't think they win the division, but they will be a solid 5 seed. This is all with few injuries in mind next year.

End result likely would've been the same, Mega.

Maybe the Lions would've won in Glendale (that's a big "if"), then they likely would've lost in the divisional round at Philly. Then, we'd all be sitting here saying "the Lions fucked up by not clinching home field advantage in week #18."

Since 1990 in the NFL, a #1 seed has failed to win a single playoff game about 25 percent of the time.

Of course the Lions have to fall in that 25%.

I try not to be a MMQB, but one thing I know would be different is that Johnson and Glenn wouldn't have been focusing on their interviews and would have had their heads in the game. It's one of the reasons I hate taking time off from work. Losing that momentum.

People need to come to grips with the fact the Lions will probably fail to make it to Super Bowl in our lifetimes.

The 15-2 regular season, while a highly impressive feat in its own right, was fool's good.

The fluke win on Thanksgiving at home to the lowly Bears, the close game at mediocre San Francisco in week #17 (where the Niners posted 34 points on us), and the ugly loss on December 15 at home to the Bills were all warning signs that this team wasn't quite as good as its record suggested.

"But they beat the Vikings 31 to 9!" you say. Following some examination, I've concluded the Vikings were another team whose regular season record was deceptive. In fact, that statement applies more strongly to the Vikings than it does the Lions. The Vikings played the Niners and Cardinals at home; I believe the Niners won only 1 road contest this year whereas the Cardinals won only 2 road contests this year. They also played the Giants (garbage), Jets (garbage), Colts, Jaguars (garbage), Titans (garbage) and Falcons. They beat the Jets in London by 6 points, the horrible Jags by only 5 points, and the horrible Titans by only 10 points. The Sunday before Thanksgiving, they needed OT to defeat the Bears at Soldier Field.

Did I expect the Lions to defeat the Commanders? I assumed the Lions would win by a TD or less, but my confidence that the Lions would win was weak. I called the game a "toss up" right after kickoff, but in my head, I thought there was a 60% chance that the Lions would win. I then assumed the Lions would lose to Philly in the NFC Championship.

I really think this analysis glosses over the defensive injuries. At full strength they probably would have handled some of those close ones a lot easier. In the beginning of the season (outside of the Tampa game) when they were at or close to full strength they were pretty much steam rolling all comers.

Thank you again. It was the offense, for many reasons, that put our dilapidated defense in untenable situations. Then there was that "twelve men of the field"....

Ben Johnson has a young QB to mold which I believe was a big reason why he chose the Bears, that and knowing the division. The franchise is a mess, but so were the Lions.

Obviously I won’t predict their record at this point.

I think he will succeed in Chicago. It will be difficult to find a successor of comparable acumen.
