No fan of Ron Desantis but it appears they did relocate the staging area before the hurricane hit.
It looks like a bunch of cots got wet or otherwise ruined but other than that no first responders were the structure when the roof collapsed.

The fact they got in there in the first place is a failure of planning whether they fixed it or not.

I just read the roof was rated for max winds of only 115 mph. Bear in mind wind velocity 75 or 100 feet off the ground can easily be 20 to 40 mph greater than surface winds during major storms.

Definitely NOT a good idea to specify that site as the original staging area for this particular storm.

It appears the State of Florida realized it made a poor choice when - thankfully - the personnel were relocated to a safer location prior to landfall.

It would seem the kind of thing they would have a standard plan for that wouldn’t include that site.

My mom and aunt relocated to Gainesville temporarily from their Villages vacation time share spot. My aunt and uncle are hunkered down in Melbourne. My cousin is riding it out just south of Orlando. Never been so involved in tracking a hurricane before. My aunt and uncle relocated from Houston and survived Harvey. I guess they know what to expect at least.

Both are well and no major damage

Sorry to hear of the lives lost in this —- various reasons at this point whether it was medical or natural coincidence

Not sure who’s bright idea it was to house anyone in a tent-topped stadium
