Ron didn't lose Jackie's number, that was the handiwork of his sticky-fingered motel maid. I'm imagining an alternative universe in which our Hazel is hosting some top-rated show/podcast, interviewing all the people whose numbers she purloined from the hapless Ron.
I think the only time he didn't blame "lost" phone numbers on the maid was when he dropped his cellphone in the snow (https://mibuzzboard.com/phpBB3/viewtopi ... 30#p720915).
So who did he blame that on?

Maybe the unique set of Ron's sails.

I am very pleased to report Al Avila is doing great at the Denny's near the airport. He's assumed additional responsibilities above and beyond his grill work. He is now responsible feeding the goldfish in the tank near the checkout stand.

That's a pretty important job. Fish tanks can add a lot to the ambience of a restaurant. I used to sit across from one at the Canton Coney Island near Joy and Lilley.

Thanks for the update, Rob. I was at Comerica the other day with a former colleague, who was unaware of Ron’s passing. I mentioned your preposterous Avila story, & how, incredibly, Ron had swallowed it whole. He was quite amused. He started talking about the ‘61 Tigers & some of the players, including Jake Wood. I told him that this was Ron’s favorite team & that Jake was a regular guest. He was regretful that he that he had never taken up my many suggestions to give Ron a listen.

I remember that Coney Island. Our favorite sushi spot is Izakaya Sanpei in the same strip mall at Joy & Lilley. Great food and service. I never mentioned it to Ron for fear he'd head over there begging for advertising revenue. Not to mention even if he had them as a sponsor I could only imagine how he would have butchered their name and menu items.

On this Saturday afternoon I was listening to a bit of
WPON and was thinking of Sportstalk

What was a favorite Ad read or maybe place you may have gone to? I did not visit any of Ron’s commercial ad spots, though my favorite reads were:

The Jumbotron-I always envisioned old school Sony tvs hanging.

B-I-N-G-O

Always was a little perplexed my the line “ladies who trim”

What were some of yours?

Went to Jimmy John’s field last night took in a baseball game, thought of Ron and his stories about the deal that did not go through with Ron and the “guy from Macomb county” as he would put it

Happy Father’s Day!

BINGO! was pretty funny—he always kept you in suspense before he said the magic word.

My most memorable advertiser visit was my last one—last February at the Southfield Ram's Horn, where I had the Imitator double-decker burger, some fries, a diet Coke, and finished up with a face-to-face conversation with Ron Cameron.

I tried to go to Home Run Eatery in West Bloomfield, but by the time I got there - with one of Ron's restaurants, you really couldn't let any moss grow under your feet - the place was open, but appeared shuttered.

As for favorite sponsors, I remember the Larry Flynt Gentleman's Club. A discordant choice for Ron's self-professed family show.

As for butchered copy, there's the upscale French restaurant in midtown Detroit that served day-old scallops.

And then there's the the soul food restaurant owners who were surprised to learn in studio that they catered bar mitzvahs.

When Cher eulogized her ex-husband she noted there was this section in the Reader’s Digest she would read as a young person:
It was called “The Most Unforgettable Character I’ve Ever Met.” And for me that person is Sonny Bono. And no matter how long I live or who I meet in my life, that person will always be Sonny for me.”

I feel much the same about Ron. As long as I have conscious thought, I will think of Ron & remember him as a "most unforgettable character."

I drive by the Cosmic Burrito on Grand River and can't help but think of Ron's ads for them. As a result of their sponsoring Mr. Cameron's show, I was a (very satisfied) customer. I once showed the bartender/cashier the positive words I wrote about them on the Buzzboard, with an amazed response from the employee.

We've been talking about Mike Downey in another thread. I checked Newspapers.com to see when Downey started at the Free Press. His first Free Press column was on 9/13/81. That was two days after Ron's last day at WXYZ.

I'm trying to find some significance in that. Historians talk about waves of change, and maybe that's what was happening. :)

Interestingly, Ron wrote a couple of columns for the Detroit Free Press in the early 1980s. One year ago yesterday, he even said that he was the Free Press's first choice for the open column position before Downey (https://mibuzzboard.com/phpBB3/viewtopi ... 30#p744836).

Can anyone dig up Ron's pre-Sports Fan Journal words of wisdom printed in the Detroit Free Press?
