SpaceX would likely want nothing more than to replace NOAA with itself and let Accuweather charge you $5 a month to know the weather. Something along the lines of the latter is in Project 2025.TC Talks wrote: ↑Fri Mar 14, 2025 10:21 pmSpaceX needs NOAA, it will be protected.Rate This wrote: ↑Fri Mar 14, 2025 9:57 pmSo I expect that when the first round of cuts is done and a few percent is gone from each department Musk and DOGE will shut down and be gone? Just like that? Poof?Hugh Jorgan wrote: ↑Fri Mar 14, 2025 8:36 pmWow. What a bunch of chicken littles. NOAA gets rid of less than 7% of it's workforce and the sky is going to fall.
Or will those cuts continue until we are talking about 40 or 50 or 60%?

Re: Elect Trump and Say Goodbye to NOAA
NOAA absolutely needs to remain in place.
It should strongly consider charging users - especially companies and large organizations - for usage of some of its weather forecast products and model data, though, especially weather software companies such as Baron, WSI Corporation, Weather Decision Technologies, The Weather Company, and AccuWeather.
These companies are taking NWS/NOAA data, repackaging & enhancing it, and then generating heaps of revenue. NWS/NOAA should receive a considerable cut of that revenue.

Trump is too stupid to know what "reciprocal" means.

NOAA data is used with every computer model that serves the US. Weather Underground was the only other option with a grassroots network of wx equipment, mostly wind and temperature collecting.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sat Mar 15, 2025 7:12 am These companies are taking NWS/NOAA data, repackaging & enhancing it, and then generating heaps of revenue. The idea of privatizing is relatively stupid.

Why do we need FEMA or NOAA?
Is this a sign from God?

Forecasters doubled down on their language on Saturday, saying they believed there was a high risk of violent, long-track tornadoes in the South.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency warned of excessive rainfall and flash flooding in the Southeast “with numerous significant tornadoes expected on Saturday afternoon and evening.”
The Storm Prediction Center received 23 reports of tornadoes since Friday across Arkansas, Illinois, Mississippi and Missouri, according to FEMA, as well as nearly a dozen reports of hurricane-force winds.

Re: Elect Trump and Say Goodbye to NOAA
I find this interesting as we were hit by this system. Currently sitting in a dark building waiting for power restoration so I can get three studios back on line. Rough way to find out your generator isn't working. Worth noting is lots of military vehicles rolling by the studios. We are in spitting distance of three bases but the amount of the vehicles, all full, is interesting considering our current political situation in the world.

I completely agree it shouldn't be privatized. Those who repackage the data and profit from it, though, should be required to pay NOAA a license fee. NOAA should be allowed to generate revenue.TC Talks wrote: ↑Sat Mar 15, 2025 10:25 amNOAA data is used with every computer model that serves the US. It is interesting that it’s only red states affected yet again other than Illinois, but it’s also impacting only the red part of Illinois mostly.TC Talks wrote: ↑Sat Mar 15, 2025 11:11 am Why do we need FEMA or NOAA?
