With Apple Pay, I haven't used a physical credit card in ~2 years now... I'd have to freeze my phone!

So what exactly is the allure of all these modern digital payment methods anyways? I guess I just don't get it. They all feel to me like they're a solution in search of a problem. Between cash, check, and credit card, I've never once thought to myself "there has to be a better way."

The two biggest positives for ApplePay to me are:

1. It is much more secure than a physical card, especially when you have to swipe the mag stripe or a waiter carries is it away from a table out of your sight. I don't have to worry if my wallet gets stolen... All my favorite places now have a Toast-type system and they carry devices to tap-to-pay. No paper receipts, etc.

2. I don't have to lug around several different cards, they all are on my phone. Kinda like my Kindle for books, I have thousands available on a single device and my library has electronic checkouts. I carry a single card with me, just in case the retailer doesn't have a tap device.

I no longer have a wallet. The last two fraud situations were with my physical credit card.

I can also pay my friends for anything I would have paid cash for in the past (split the bill, split gas, parking, whatever) just by sending a text message. I don’t ever worry about having to find an ATM and breaking bills and carrying change.

But you still gotta lug around that big ass phone everywhere you go.

Regarding security, I've never had a problem. I don't think I've ever once been robbed of paper money and the only credit card breach I ever had happen to me was in the early 2000s someone overseas went on a shopping spree (no idea how they got my info), but even that was easy to get taken care of.

I'm not being critical of these newer modern payment methods, I'm just a bit amused at how quickly cash and credit cards became some kind of major inconvenience.

Big ass phone? Lug? My wallet is bigger and more inconvenient than my phone. I already carry my phone with me anyway. My phone isn’t on the wall in the kitchen.

I also still have cash and physical cards. That’s still available when I want or need them. But i have to consider them less now. My spends are also automatically recorded in one place down to the penny so i can review my expenses more easily and accurately.

For me, it’s not that cash and cards are inconvenient, but digital payment is waaaaay more convenient with far more benefits and advantages.

Sure it’s not a flip phone… or god forbid a brick with an antenna you physically extend… but it’s not that big or cumbersome. Besides… it’s rarely not actively in use for most people.

Like you, I prefer physical credit cards when shopping at a bricks-and-mortar retailer. It's easier to choose the most optimal card (from a rewards standpoint) that way. I also don't have to worry about encountering a retailer that might not yet have NFC payment technology.

In a store a while ago, the guy ahead of me at the checkout was paying with his ap. Such a time saver. It only took him about twenty minutes to complete the transaction,. I'll go on paying cash,

I used to think using a Nextel phone was like holding a book up to my ear. Can't imagine using a 6" iPhone (or any phone with a 6" or larger screen).
