Got the debut remastered CD as well as "Don't Look Back" also remastered on CD!! (From 2006)

Upon its release, my college roommate would play this almost daily! I can recall voice-of-God radio promos hyping the fact Tom Scholz had a master's degree in engineering from MIT, as if somehow that translated into great music. However, one can't argue against the album's lasting popularity!

The story of how that first album was created is very interesting, with Scholz doing most of the work in his home studio. There are probably some similarities between how Scholz created the music and how A.I. is used to create music now.

I strapped on my headphones yesterday and gave it a listen from beginning to end. I've heard all of the songs many times, but hearing them one after another as part of just one studio album was a great experience. The pulsing, multitracked sound hasn't dated one day.

I saw them in concert on the "Don't Look Back" tour. I can still hear the opening guitar riff from the title track echoing throughout the arena.

When the album began to catch on, Epic churned out reams of promotional copy, calling [Tom] Scholz a mechanical genius and keying the group's appeal to the slogan, "Better Music Through Science."

"All that promotion drove me crazy," Scholz said in an interview after a recent sold-out concert at the Capital Theater here.

"The science rap was dreamed up by one guy, who took a look at the spaceships on our album cover and bombarded everyone with the slogan," Scholz said. "We tried to stop it, as we got a lot of bad reviews from people who came up to us and said, ‘What makes you so special?'"

[Brad] Delp added, "We've all been playing together, on and off, for a long time now — six or seven years. Individually for six or seven more. The public seems to see us as mad scientists who decided to delve into the music field without ever having played before.

"But I guess the publicity got us a lot of attention.".
