106.7 WLLZ quietly segues to mostly 1990s to 2010s rock

I don't remember Kevin being on 106.7. Maybe he was in Alice's early days? I remember Steve Black being part of the lineup initially. He sounded out of place on that station.

Kevin was never on The Drive. He was in the building at WNIC at the same time. Maybe they used him for that Arthur P promo. He does a GREAT Arthur P! BABYYYYYYY!

There was a story, speaking of The Edge, not sure if it's true or not, that The Edge was killed because it was cutting into WRIF's numbers. I don't recall them being a ratings powerhouse, but if they were hurting RIFF 18/34, when RIFF was the cash cow, bye-bye.

Why is iheart going with an Oregon based morn show??

Morn on 106.7 has been hit and miss for yrs going back to a short lived Bob & Tom to Rover from Clev etc etc.

Why not go with a more local Mich based show like Free Beer & Hot Wings that would work with the new 90s/2000s playlist and that demo.

Listened to them recently when I was up in Frankenmuth on 101.5 not a bad show imo. Thought of 106.7 right away as a great fit.

Why not go with a more local Mich based show like Free Beer & Hot Wings that would work with the new 90s/2000s playlist and that demo.

Listened to them recently when I was up in Frankenmuth on 101.5 not a bad show imo. Thought of 106.7 right away as a great fit.

Because the show is piped in from an Ifart station. Meaning the company either doesn't have to pay for it, or pay next to nothiong for it.

Most likely it's just barter. Run some spots to clear the show.

Free Beer and Hot Wings are on the decline. Used to be hilarious but have fallen greatly. I don’t even find them amusing anymore. Their show has essentially become a parody of itself. They only have has many stations as they do because they had it written into their contract that all Townsquare rock stations must carry them

That's what I meant. He himself wasn't on the station but did do the Arthur P voice and "Ann Car-looni". All I remember about it was they were playing songs WRIF quit playing.

As for the Edge, that pretty much nails it down. The rock pie was getting smaller and 105.1 was taking too much from WRIF, who couldn't go too classic and mess with WCSX.

At least that was the story I got from Carolyn Stone 20 years ago or so. "Cash cow" was the phrase brought up.

Yes I get it thats its in house with iheart and on the cheap but my point was that they have had so many kicks at the can in morn drive with no success ratings wise with so many synd stations Free Beer has the chances of success is a bit higher imo.

Not to worry another change is 6mos away.

The Edge was disposable because its revenue and ratings were rather lackluster and the need to flank WRIF with a younger demo alt rock station had diminished. Xtreme Radio 97.1 had flipped from aggro rock to hot talk the prior summer.

It's unfortunate, because based on my limited listening online (remember RealPlayer?), I thought it was a quality radio station. One could argue it had 89X on the ropes even.

Let's not forget, either, that Jammin' Oldies was a very big format craze at the time. Detroit given its demographics was a great fit for the format, at least on paper.

Ultimately, the Jammin Oldies format as programmed proved too narrow and song burnout became a big problem after just a couple years.

Had 105.1 not flipped to the format, I very strongly suspect AMFM would've flipped 106.7 to the format. Instead, five months later, 106.7 flipped to Alice.
