Radio Format holes

Unread post by BKRPDM »

With the news about CSX and Wheels going with newer material, and now sharing a bit more with Riff and 98.7; and also the fact of 92.3, 105.1, 105.9, 97.9 and 107.5 sharing some similar music, seems like there are some definite format holes here:

*Softer AC - to compete with WNIC?
*Newer, harder Classic Hits station like Z93 Dayton?
*Now that CSX has left older titles behind, an older Classic Rock station?
*Classic alternative with some AAA (like The River in its day)?

Thoughts?

Adult Hits and 90s/00s hits are the two that have the best chance of success locally. The latter would share quite a few titles in common with The Bounce, though.

A classic soul / jammin' oldies hybrid is another that could be considered.

Aside from potentially Hot 107.5, no one has ratings weak enough to warrant a significant change at the moment.

If a "format hole" exists, it's because nobody thinks they can make money with it. Of course, the people make such decisions are often wrong. Even so, those decisions are made for the success of the station - not to provide a complete "menu" of formats. That said, the big reason radio is dying is because - more and more - people can't find anything to which they want to listen.

Agree wth both, although a 90's/00K station doesn't, and shouldn't, be just rhythmic like the Bounce. Lots of pop titles to play from that era. Think Pop2K on SXM if you've ever listened. They are straight down the middle. The closest thing to that we have here now is probably WDVD. They play several OOks hits. That would be a natural format evolution for them, and the current talent is the right age for that format.

Not music related but how about an all-female talk format? Has this been tried before?

Yes. MyTalk 107.1 in Minneapolis. That station is very much cherished by Ginny Morris, one of the executives at Hubbard Broadcasting.

Yacht Rock is a mood listen, not a format hole. Would such a station have any P-1 listeners? Maybe, but not enough to sustain it, especially from a revenue standpoint.
An HD2 station option, or maybe weekend summmer programming at best.
