Scripps annual Summertime Tradition set to continue today

Sounds like the next round of Scripps axes are dropping today. Not sure who will be left there by the end of the year but it sounds like most...if not all of their weather will be coming from Detroit and lots downsizing on Plainfield... as if there was much left to cut anyway? While the writing has been on the wall for this industry for more than a decade, it still always sucks to see people shoved out the door.

The weather segments lately haven't been a full forecast look at tomorrow and 3 days are shown then the 7 day 15 minutes later. I don't like it at all.

I am waiting for Scripts to just run a Michigan News Room out of WXYZ in Detroit. A Block will be anchored and contain state wide and national news. B block will be the local crap anchorless reporting 17 has now from 1 or 2 reporters left who work out of their house or a small rented office on town. WEATHER will be a state wide look from Detroit with a throw to, now here is the upcoming forecast where you live and local graphics for the next 7 days and music in the background. They will then do Sports but only talk major and minor league teams. Local sports coverage will only be done on line. Watch them try to save on this offering to partner with local schools to use journalism students to cover this in exchange for a donation from their foundation.

I agree with SHolmes in that Fox17 News pretty much gets downgraded to a small segment leading into Michigan news from WXYZ. Similar to roughly 35 years ago how then WUHQ 41 operated as "News 8 South" opening the newscast with Mark Bedore reporting on Kalamazoo/Battle Creek news before going to commercial and joining News 8 for weather, state news and only professional level sports (possibly omitting Whitecaps and Griffins unless Detroit has teams in those leagues as well). WXMI and WXYZ appear to be the only Michigan stations that still Scripps owns as they sold WSYM Fox47 in Lansing to Gray which already owned WLNS NBC 6.

Assuming the above were to become reality, it will be interesting especially during severe weather as WXYZ meteorologists will have no idea on the small cities or which West Michigan county is which. Haley Vogel being the exception but she left WZZM about 20 years ago. Another Michael Fish disaster in the making I fear.

What's sadly comical is that fancy studio remodel 17 did a few years ago and now barely get used. I'm trying to remember if Scripps was already the owner when it happened or if this was one of Tribune's last major expenditures.

As long as they sell ads, does it matter if they used Fresh out of CMU or seasoned talent from Detroit?

Well, news of another casualty on Plaza Drive whas been made known: Kevin Craig . According to a post he made early this morning on Facebook, he was told in May his contract was not being renewed and his last day on air was August 4 and the one year non-compete within West Michigan would be enforced. He also mentions working at 17 since Scripss took over took a toll on his health. The days of double and triple shifts 7 days a week led to his hospitalization for exhaustion back in December.

I actually sampled about 20 mins of Fox 17 news it last night (by accident) for the first time in a LONG time, and it appears the newsroom is already gone. Literally jumping from story to story, some were local...others randomly in Colorado with no intros, no flow of local versus regional etc...What an absolute dumpster fire. Hard to believe many of us on here were laughing at Fox 17ers when it was believed they were about to become Sinclair Employees (until it fell through). In hindsight, as shady as Sinclair is, this Scripps merger is the absolute worst thing to happen to a once good station.
