WCXI Cool1160

Just came across this today on the TuneIn app “Cool 1160 Southeastern Michigan’s New Home for Classic Hits!” I listened for a few minutes and it is WCXI 1160, the station itself is currently not on the air yet. Check out the stream not sounding too bad. You need to stream through the Tunein app if you stream through the website for WCXI you still get the old time religious broadcasts.

1460 actually comes in better for me at the moment.

The livestream on Birach’s website is indeed still Brother Stair. Their signal is garbage down my way until they fix the transmitter.

If 1160 does indeed flip to classic hits, what does that do to 1460? Aaron Gresser would be the guy to chime in.

Wow, what a pleasant surprise to wake up to. I never thought they would put any effort into this station. I am currently listening on the tune in app. It's not bad at all. Decent voiceovers, and nice logo. I hope they fix the signal (which I'm sure they will given the attention they've recently brought to this frequency). Well, well.... I'm impressed.
I just heard the TOH ID. Owned by birach broadcasting , and operated by Revolving Door LLC. Any chance they will actually make a go of this? Sounds pretty legit to me.

Blackburn Media called. In order to be COOL, you have to play "Lunatic Fringe" at least once every three hours.

I just checked the AM signal. It hasn't changed, both in programming and poor range. My guess is Overcomer still has a contract, once it expires it'll flip to Cool 1160. Fixing the transmitter may play a role too.

This will clearly be an upgrade programming wise, probably also gain some listeners. Whether it'll be enough to bring in advertising and break even, it's a long uphill climb for sure.

I get this frequency in well in my area. I will definitely check this out, even if 1460's tx is closer to me.

Hey gang, I guess it's about time I give my "state of the union" on Birach and what's going on with WCXI.

First off, I am the culprit behind Cool 1160. This has been a passion project for me since 2018, believe it or not! This new station is an evolution of my first foray into radio, a part 15, low power station called 87.9 WWCH that ran out of my bedroom. That station ran on and off for a few years, got shelved, and was then revived a couple years back as a full time internet station thanks to a few friends of mine.

I presented the idea to Sima Jr. a couple months back to bring some REAL programming to his Brother Cult and other misc. burner stations. He agreed and we are now running this as a joint collaboration between Birach Broadcasting and Revolving Door Media LLC, my new company (the veterans will know where I got the name for it.)

Now, on to the other stations. I saw a few replies asking about WPON and what's happening with it. WPON, as many of you already know, is a weird case. I would love to clean it up, have it stick to the format instead of being completely off the deep end, and make it somewhat profitable. The issue is that there are too many niche and grandfathered shows that would go kicking and screaming if we took them off the air (plus shows I would hate to take off period), and the pattern and signal are too directional and weak to really do anything with. WCXI I'm at least somewhat confident in because it's 15KW, WPON at 670W...not so much. What WPON needs to do is drop it's format entirely and become a community format, open to anything and everyone. That way when a show plays some song from the current top 40 or any of the Hindu shows come on, it won't be so jarring. WPON barely sticks to the "format" anyway, so I don't think dropping it would cause too much chaos.

Now to address the question out of that...are you guys just going to not have an oldies station anymore??? That's where WCAR comes in. We received permission from Sima to drop the Spanish WSDS feed and do our own thing. We are going currently putting together a true, honest to God, oldies station for Detroit. No format breaks, no willy-nilly programming, just oldies. We'll be taking most of the music from WPON and even some of the specialty shows like Weekend Soft Side and Midnight Freakout (and some may be syndicated on WCXI as well).

Oh, and WNZK will still be WNZK. No shocker there.

To wrap up this long state of the union, I want to quickly thank you all for the positive preliminary thoughts on the web feed. This has been a massive passion project for me and I couldn't have done it without Phil from WPON and the support from the entire Birach crew, my friends and my family. It really is a dream come true for me. As soon as we get the transmitters repaired for WCXI and WCAR (hopefully in the next two weeks or so), we will be good to launch, so stay tuned!

Wow this is absolutely fantastic!!!! I cannot express how happy I am to hear all this great news! You sir have once agian given the breath of life to these once amazing radio stations. The changes to WPON make sense. Still brings in revenue from the brokered shows.

WCXI and WCAR, certainly it’s an upgrade to the formats and there was a large overlap between the latter and WSDS signal wise. Have you planned on how you will get advertising? Shooting for an FM translator? That’ll be the real issue to making these stations stick around. It’s a tough business especially on AM.

Will there be deeper cuts thrown in once in a while?

This could be the final nail on the coffin for CKWW’s minuscule audience.

I am looking forward to the new format and I am saving a space on my presets. I am a mile away from 1090, and 1160 comes in well enough for me. But why does it have to be a nail in the coffin for CKWW? Can't we see some competition and have a choice?

Wow! It's been SO long since there's been anything worth listening to for music on AM. (Aside from WPON at times.)
I also used to enjoy listening to WCXI when it was still from Fenton and playing classic country and bluegrass.
