I got some "new to me" vinyl over the weekend. Got Chicago's Transit Authority for $1 in the used bin at Media Reload. Only reason it was $1 is because the cover is ugly as sin, but the records themselves are in great shape. Listened to side 2 of the first record(on accident).

I admit that the 70's is kind of a blind spot for me music wise, but there seems to be a lot more 70's stuff floating around in the vinyl community and isn't completely trashed or a fortune. The sound from my 5 in 1 player is atrocious, but I am working on getting speakers for my new to me Sony record player soon.

Avoid the mainstream crap that gets peddled over and over again on FM radio. If you can get your hands on a copy of The Only Ones first s/t LP (Another Girl, Another Planet) is really good.

When all those prog bands went AOR in 1978/79/80 can get interesting 😆 🤣

I like the fringe of the mainstream but not too avant- guarde. My record collection is what Doug FM should have been:

The Supremes
The Temptations
Dionne Warwick
The Who
2001 Space Odyssey soundtrack
Elvis
Alice In Chains
Linkin Park
Boz Scaggs
Lou Rawls
Ronnie Milsap
Sonny and Cher
Sandi Patti
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Foreigner
Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack
Kenny Rogers
Johnny Cash
Culture Club
Whitney Houston
The Doors
Cream
Eric Clapton
David Bowie

MCRF FM….we REALLY play everything.

I am pretty eclectic. Some of these are other $1 finds that I am just seeing if I like, and some are true faves. Worst case I go around the corner and trade them.

MCRF FM sounds excellent. How about some Level 42, Swing Out Sister, Style Council, Talk Talk, Squeeze, The Sundays, Cocteau Twins, Everything But The Girl, The Smiths, Kate Bush just to name a few.

I finally gave up on my multifunctional Crosley to listen to records and got a Audio-Technica turntable and some fairly affordable Elimavi speakers off of Amazon.

Grew up in the 70s, and I've had good luck finding reasonably priced 70s albums at Dearborn Music in Farmington, People's Records in Detroit (near Greektown) and Finders Keepers in Plymouth.

And of course eBay is a wonderful place to find old vinyl. My latest impulsive purchase from that website was the 1980 Troublemakers album from Warner Bros. It was part of their great "loss leader" collection of albums that showcased different artists from WB's different labels (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warner/Re ... ss_Leaders). This one focused on punk/new wave music of the late 70s.

I know all but Swing Out Swister and Style Council. I was just listing off based on my collection. LOL.

Level 42, OMD(I know you didn't list them but being we are in that genre), Talk Talk, Smiths, Morrissey, and Kate Bush would get airtime for sure. They are personal faves.

The Crosley has its place, and I am not selling mine. But I got a Sony record player(circa 2001 era). Just need speakers for it. The Crosley sound is marginal at best.

I recently came across an episode of Barry Robinson's slightly Anglo-centric YouTube channel Classic Album Review titled "Ten Most Underrated Albums Ever!!" as voted on by his viewers. Four of the albums happened to be in my collection so I just had to give three of them another concerted listen this morning. :smokin

Nursery Cryme (1971)
-Genesis
If one can abide Peter Gabriel's jejune lyrics and sorrowful high-pitched whimpering, the album is a musical leap in the annals of British progressive rock which was certainly hitting its stride commercially at the time. I can always enjoy listening to the ten-minute epic "The Musical Box" and other numbers here. As an avid gardener and home landscaper "The Return of the Giant Hogweed" strikes a chord, though my nemeses are more along the lines of pokeweed, wild grapes, bittersweet nightshade, and Canada thistle. This was the first appearance of guitarist Steve Hackett and drummer Phil Collins, all to the group's benefit. I agree with Robinson that this album would benefit greatly from a modern remix.

The Who By Numbers (1975)
-The Who
I suppose this album is underrated only in comparison with the group's acknowledged classics such as Tommy, Who's Next, and Quadrophenia; but there isn't a single clunker to be heard! Personal favorites are "Success Story" and the concluding "In a Hand or a Face". "Slip Kid" and "Squeeze Box" were popular singles. Lead vocals alternate between Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, Keith Moon is as relentless as ever on the drums, and bassist John Entwhistle said in an interview that "Dreaming From the Waist" was his favorite song to play live. The album certainly isn't underrated by me!

Obscured By Clouds (1972)
-Pink Floyd
This is the soundtrack album to Iranian-Swiss-French director Barbet Schroeder's early film La Vallée -- a film I've yet to see, but whose synopsis sounds interesting, if totally in the realm of hippie escapism which was in arthouse vogue at the time. Despite that, the music here is replete with the marvelous Floydian rhythms, timbres, and textures one associates with the group. Nothing really rocks, but everything is tastefully musical and the vocals from predominately Roger Waters and David Gilmour are beautifully mellifluous. This was all well before Waters' angst-ridden yowling. The number "Free Four" still hints at his future all-pervading familial anxiety, though here it's muted by an upbeat tone and is probably my favorite number on the album, along with the concluding "Stay" sung by Gilmour.

"Blue, Red, and Grey" popped up on my YouTube music feed the other day. Another great song from that album.

Also, that YT channel is my favorite music channel. His raves are great, and his criticisms are witheringly sharp. Before I read your post, I started listening to Deep Purple's latest album SPLAT!, based on that guy's positive review of the album.

Going For the One (1977)
-Yes
One of this seminal prog band's mid-'70s attempts to re-invent themselves. I can't say their sound has been "reinvented" here, at least not to the extent it was the following decade, but musically it's as ornate as ever and often quite beautiful and/or dramatic. Steve Howe on guitar, Chris Squire on bass, and Rick Wakeman on keys blend their stylings as masterfully as ever! We hear shades of old time rock & roll, country & western, the Far and Middle East -- all with the group's usual proclivity for maximum blended taste and virtuosity. My big problem is the same as I wrote elsewhere concerning R.E.M.'s album Monster - vocalist Jon Anderson is buried so low in the mix as to sound like mere added texture! His lyrics are mostly inscrutable to me anyway. Favorite numbers abound, but I'll single out a popular favorite among fans - the concluding epic "Awaken". My CD has a plethora of delicious bonus tracks as well.

If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You (1970)
-Caravan
The opening title track is probably one of the more insipid and mistitled numbers to be found on this second album from this progenitor band of the so-called Canterbury Scene. I suppose some may find it ear-catching. Fortunately, the album gets much better to these ears as it progresses. We hear that marvelous blending of rhythms and timbres in pop, jazz, and psychedelia which came to beautifully full fruition on their following album In the Land of Grey and Pink. It's that next album I'd unequivocally recommend to novice listeners and the otherwise uninitiated. Especially recommended is the lengthy multi-part epic "Nine Feet Underground"!

A somewhat eclectic mix this morning:

Murmur (1983)
Document (1987)
-R.E.M.
I think my first exposure to R.E.M. was "The One I Love" on the radio. After all the over-produced '80s pablum I was hearing, here was a band exemplifying what people love about jangly guitar-based pop; it certainly pricked up my ears! The Byrds came immediately to mind. Their album Murmur was released a few years earlier, perhaps in the band's nascent period, and it quickly established them on the college and bar band circuit.

The Lover & the Beloved (2004)
-Donna De Lory
I was introduced to De Lory's music through either Music from the Hearts of Space or Echoes on CMU Public Radio. Imagine my surprise at the time to discover she was doing backing vocals and touring with Madonna! This album features beautiful chant-based mantras with Eastern and Hindu musical influences. De Lory's voice is lovely and perfect for this new age/world music. I can always listen to tunes such as "Om Nama Shivaya" and "Govinda Jaya Jaya" when the mood strikes, as it did this morning.

Prologue (1972)
-Renaissance
The band Renaissance was originally formed as a classically-based rock group including a couple former members from The Yardbirds, but it is this later assemblage with vocalist Annie Haslam, Michael Dunford, John Tout, Jon Camp, and Terry Sullivan that solidified the band's reputation. I was introduced to them one Sunday morning on Detroit FM radio with the tune "Spare Some Love" while sitting in my car in the church parking lot, heard once and never again...that's until I bought this album on vinyl, and now on CD. Haslam's voice is multi-octave and blends beautifully with the group's fusion of classical, folk, rock, and jazz influences. The band would reach their peak musically with subsequent albums. Their album Live from Carnegie Hall is especially recommended!

Gonna see Bonnie Raitt for the upteenth time in a couple months and checking out her opening act, Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen. Kind of a New Orleans blues band, but with a different edge. I'll make sure we're seated for their set.
