TORONTO -- “Hockey Night in Canada” will not air on the CBC next season.

In a joint statement, Rogers Sportsnet and the CBC say that the public broadcaster will no longer carry NHL broadcasts.

Hockey Night has aired for nearly 75 years on CBC television. A sub-licensing agreement between Rogers Communications and the CBC that allowed the program to air on the network expired at the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

As someone who enjoyed watching Hockey Night in Canada, I am very pissed about this decision.
My furthest DTV tropo: KDKA Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 202 miles for three days in January 2017 and a night in September 2017 with only an Antennas Direct C2V!

Current setup: Antennas Direct C2Max (2018-present)

A money thing. A few years ago CBC was offered the rights to the theme and turned it down saying the owner wanted too much for the ability to play it. So Sports Net. plunked down a chunk of cash and bought it out right.

This is truly the end of an era.

I assume NHL Network will continue to carry some HNIC broadcasts for American viewers.

And how much was that theme bought for? $2 million. Not that much considering. Hopefully TSN buys the IP of Hockey Night, since they were the ones who bought the song in perpetuity.

I have a feeling that the CBC didn't exactly fight this decision. Even in the days they had the rights themselves there were many executives who thought broadcasting hockey was beneath them.

I hope everyone remembers there still will be HNIC on the Sportsnet networks, including City, TVS and I think one or 2 other Canadian Nets. It just wont be on CBC. Can be easily gotten in many legal and illegal ways, although I wouldnt know anything about that. And Yes MW, they will still be on NHL network in the states, and I bet they might do both the early and late games now.

Its happening all over. If you think the NFL will be on free TV in 10 years, you might want to rethink that.

Here is the facts:
the 2013 deal gave rogers ..
Canadian NHL TV Rights, Digital Rights,Radio Rights, streaming rights,Stanley Cup rights
Nowhere in the deal does it say rogers purchased
the HNIC name, logo, iconic theme [ the theme was given to bell media -CTV/TSN]
the trademarks,and the brand identity
Rogers own announcement said
CBC would continue airing HNIC, Rogers would produce the show
and this is the important thing to note
CBC would sublicense the HNIC name and Brand to Rogers [ Like TNT sublicenses "INSIDE THE NBA" ,"NBA TIP OFF", and "AT THE HALF" to ESPN/ABC]
when the sublicensing deal ended , the HNIC brand and name stayed with CBC
Rogers would have to rename its saturday night hockey broadcasts

This. The NFL keeps getting more and more in bed with Netflix and Amazon every year. I wouldn't doubt if those two get the bulk of the next TV contracts. They might leave SOME games on free TV so Congress doesn't have something to give the appearance of complaining about. Something like Browns-Texans on CBS followed by Seahawks-Patriots and Bills-Eagles on Amazon every Sunday.

...and? The HNIC branding is worthless without having NHL games. What, is the CBC going to use it to broadcast minor or junior hockey nationally against the NHL? No, they're out of the sports business except for whatever rights to the Olympics they have.

True. Unless they have another licensing deal in place either with Sportsnet/Rogers...OR...someone else...TSN? AND it appears the CBC isnt getting out of the sports broadcasting biz, just the PRO sports broadcasting biz...they plan on doing some amateur athletic spotlight show on Saturday up against "Saturday Night Hockey" on Sportsnet. Mind you it will be slaughtered by the hockey, but the CBC IS the national broadcaster in Canada. PBS isnt bidding for NFL games anytime soon.
