Spring 2026 'conditions'

For the second time this week, caught a few far off FM stations. My first log deleted itself, that was back on Wednesday. Todays was only the lower half (or below 97 MHz) of the FM band, above 97 MHz there was no abnormalities on any frequency. I was mainly utilizing my tv antenna which is much larger (about 5 ft long) and more directional than before, hooked to older Sony stereo (only one I have that has coaxial FM antenna connection) Same height, approx. 24 feet above ground. Location Rochester Hills.

Handheld radio used was Sangean HDR-14 or Tecsun PL-580 (I switched back and forth)

88.1 CBEE weak
88.5 smile FM (WCTP, WYOR, WJOM? Unknown which)
89.3 CKGW stronger than usual
90.3 KDTI mixed (CBEG on antenna, WCLV on handheld radio, both choppy)
90.5 mixed (WKAR dominant but staticy, CJAH??)
91.3 new CFCO staticy
91.5 WVMV mixed with unidentifiable (nothing via handheld radios)
93.5 CBCL clear
94.3 CKSY replacing translator
96.7 heavy interference to CHYR (CHYM? Had canadian commercials while CHYR playing music)


*by the way, on a sidenote regarding CFCO 91.3- I did post prior that the new CFCO was regularly booming in at my location- the engineers definitely retuned the transnitter/antenna setup but now within last few weeks it normally does not come in at my location at all and only does so when conditions are favorable.

Was just out doing grass and some more DX'ing on my 3M AM/FM hearing protectors (probably most offbeat thing to DX with)

But outside was just getting CKLO and WKCQ battling on 98.1.

On 90.5, the station mixing with WKAR was likely CKXM from Exeter, ON.

The station mixing with WVMV was likely CKBT from Kitchener. This would make sense since CHYM was interfering with CHYR.

There've been days over the past week where 95.1 CKUE has come in like a local in the car during the middle of the day.

Thursday evening I was getting a faint WWCB Corry, PA (near Erie) in the background of WSPD. I don’t recall hearing that before.

Friday evening I was catching a station that was playing Beautiful Music on AM 1410. I assume it was KQV, which I’ve never received before. Fading went from strong to weak and it seemed like the station was very light on ID. I listened for an hour while working on another project before it faded away completely. I’ll try again tonight as I left the Transoceanic dial in the same spot.

Pretty decent conditions in the Lansing area on Sunday night. In addition to 103.7 WCKY which is a pretty frequent tropo visitor, I pulled in quite a few Toledo and NW Ohio stations including: 107.7 WPFX, 106.5 WTOD, Y105 Mansfield, Q105, WIOT clashing with the Lansing Strong Tower translator, 102.3 WPOS in the WKAR translator null, 101.3 WNCO Ashland, 101.5 The River, 91.3 WGTE, and T102 Lima. Also had CHYR in on 96.7 and WNIC clashing with WWSJ's translator which is normally a rock solid signal.

Had some weak tropo this morning so did not get many catches but got a new catch so can't complain this time around.

As for the setup, I now keep the tv antenna pointed east (weather/wind related as well as for DXing), have a different stereo connected to the antenna (now a Kenwood VR-507), and the antenna preamp is set for 30dB gain now. Does good with distant reception as I don't watch much OTA TV anymore. Just watching the DX maps and try to catch what I can.

This is the map I watch, but yesterday morning it was just showing a few yellow splotches, which is up to 250 km distance where signals have been transmitted/recieved. I really was not expecting to get anything at all but WMJI peeked through and I don't recall picking up that station before. Other than the few Canadian stations that almost always come in, this was a decent surprise.

I don't always jump to DXing unless the map has oranges, reds or purples over the area.

More weaker tropo but was surprised at WYBA and presumably WUCX, of course I've driven into and out of range of WUCX many times but both 90.1 stations I have not recieved them in a tropo event from SE Michigan. Was in the car parked in Troy, not on the home setup. Here's today's catches

Was surprised on 97.5 that WJIM was nowhere to be found on 1st lap, then that's all there was to be heard on 97.5.

Also of note 94.3 CKSY was nowhere to be found, which is unusual. That station comes in almost every tropo event.

I've been getting into NOAA Weather Radio DXing. Here's some interesting catches I got in northern Downriver at around 11PM Memorial Day.

162.425 WNG-735 New Philadelphia, OH very weak (usual KXI-94 Angola, IN was nowhere to be heard)
142.45 WNG-582 Sandusky, MI cutting into usual WNG-647 Adrian)
162.475 pretty weak WXJ-46 Dayton, OH (NEW CATCH!) cutting into KIH-29 Flint
162.5 WNG-698 Lorain, OH cutting into WXL-51 Toledo
162.525 KZZ-47 Findlay, OH (common during tropos)

I also heard something cutting into KEC-63 Detroit, but since KEC-63 is so strong at my house, I couldn't make out what it was, probably KHB-59 Cleveland

Additionally, I received 162.425 KJY-93 Muncie, IN for the first time on May 9, while the usual KXI-94 Angola didn't even come in

EDIT: Just received a very weak KZZ-32 Meadville, PA on 162.475 (NEW CATCH!)
