9&10, WE DON'T CARE ABOUT A GR TORNADO

Unread post by TC Talks »

9 & 10 has taken it upon themselves to interrupt the March madness game which includes MSU so they can sit and bable on about a possible tornado in the Grand Rapids ADI.

We don't care, Alma, and Newaygo can't get your shitty station, please return to the game.

Signed,

Just about everyone.

I agree regarding the Gratiot County cell. That should've been left for WNEM and WLNS to handle.

Not sure I agree regarding the Newaygo County cell. WWTV is easier to receive OTA than WWMT for some Newaygo County viewers, even in the SE part of the county. Also, that cell was lifting toward SW Mecosta County, which is within 9&10's DMA.

I always wonder where should stations draw the line as far viewing area alerts?

Toledo market stations cover Monroe County, even though it's technically the Detroit Market. Vise versa with Lenawee County as it's the Toledo market even though Detroit stations cover it as well.

Van Wert County used to have weather alerts broadcast in the Toledo market after the devastating Veteran's Day tornadoes, but not much anymore.

WEWS in Cleveland used to interrupt if there was a tornado warning in Hancock County, even though it's in the Toledo market.

I certainly disagree. I have cable now, so I don't watch 9&10 over the air, and frankly, living in Newaygo County, I couldn't care less what is going on up north when WWMT covers the local stories here instead (plus, on cable, we only get WWMT). However, especially after the digital conversion, Ch. 9's signal is far easier to get here in Fremont OTA than it had been in the past. Plus, 3 has a crappy DTV signal here due to hills in the way vs. 9 having an antenna way up high to the north. I'd always have to point *exactly* at 3 to get it, and even then it would often drop out (it was previously solid on analog). Those in the northern half of Newaygo County are far more likely to be watching 9 over 3, by far. I think anyone north of Fremont or White Cloud are going to really struggle to receive 3 over the air reliably and will be watching 9 instead. Digital signals are awfully fickle and people will just pick the most reliable signal their TV gives them oftentimes. Funny enough, back in the analog days, FOX 17 sucked here most days and we had to resort to watching FOX 6 instead with a far better signal. Now it's the opposite on digital.

But I agree on your other point. When 8 or 13 are spending an hour covering rotation in the clouds along the Indiana border, it's frustrating. Leave that up to Channel 3. It's annoying when you're watching something and a station is covering something on the very fringe of their coverage where an actual local channel is 30 or 40 miles from the same location.

Same thing happened several years ago in Lansing when WLNS interrupted a prime time MSU/Michigan football game on WLAJ for 20 minutes to talk about a possible tornado in far eastern Livingston County.

I believe alerting viewers is an important thing. Fumbling through narrating radar less professional than the app or Website on my phone for 20+ minutes was not necessary. A quick interruption during halftime with a crawl would be fine. If they had some need for wall to wall coverage, send it to a sub-channel...

BTW, the play by play from Michigan Extreme Weather on YouTube was much better.

Step 1: Subscribe to YouTube TV.
Step 2: Download fake GPS app to your phone
Step 3: When local station breaks in, activate app to show location anywhere outside your market
Step 4: Cast phone to TV
Step 5: Problem solved

Newaygo County (and Oceana and Mecosta Counties) are in the grey-area overlap between the West MI and Northern MI markets. Depending on where you are, it's easier to get 9&10 over the air than it is 3 (or 7&4 instead of 8).

9&10 was justified in covering the possible tornado since it was on the edge of their viewing area and heading into it, but they should have done what WWMT did and put the live coverage on a subchannel (or on FOX 32) with a crawl scrolling below the game.

A crawl redirecting viewers to Fox 32 would've been a good solution, especially since Fox 32 is simulcast on either 9.2 or 9.3 (I forget which).
