KHQ tower is victim of ice storm

Seems the entire KHQ tower was felled during the ice storm. They are figuring out how to get back on air. Best of luck to all involved. Be safe

Wow, hopefully MacGarb can temporarily move to another tower. WXLT isn't too far away. I wonder how badly the tx cable and antenna ended up.

Were there other signals on that tower?

That's a disaster to say the least. I wonder if KHQ programming will temporarily move to 106.7?

It will be difficult to deliver a good signal to both Petoskey and Traverse City if an AUX site at reduced power is used.

If KHQ's tragedy doesn't bring some ears to Z93, then nothing will.

106.7 has a carrier without audio today. That would be a great solution.
The 600 foot tower collapsed on Sunday evening from multiple days of heavy sleet and freezing rain accumulation in the area that led to heavy ice accumulation. In addition to the tower, the area has had snapped power lines with over 90,000 homes and businesses losing power.

WKHQ Program Director/morning host ‘Ashley Z’ Elzinga went on the morning show of sister Variety Hits “104.5 Bob-FM” WZTC Traverse City and stated that the tower collapsed onto the equipment shed on the way down. She also explained how she had gone to a local Home Depot to purchase a generator for the tower site on Sunday afternoon and met one of the station owners halfway for it to be brought up to the site. At this point she did not know how long the station would be off the air, but she and the staff have been posting continuous storm updates and information on the station’s social media.

106.7 is still a carrier without audio, I believe the studios in Petoskey remain dark. Even the Meijer next door was without power as of 1p today.

Ya know things are awfully bad when even Meijer has no power for an extended period.

Is Lite 96.3 broadcasting as normal?

When I left that building in the 1980's I swore I'd never listen again. I didn't check.

Fair enough.

Their live stream is down, so I'm guessing they are off the air, too.

Maybe I am overthinking this, but they are posting on their socials tearing eyed "we wish we were back on the air" videos, but wouldn't this be the most amazing time to increase their streaming audience and continue to broadcast via online? From a technical standpoint there is no doubt they could continue streaming, knowing that their systems are going to be offline for weeks (if not months) with that tower (and the transmitter equipment at the base) down.

Just some thoughts I guess.

Petoskey just got power this morning and Charlevoix an hour ago. I can imagine remote tower locations aren't a priority for the linemen.

96.3, 98.1, 106.7, 105.9, 105.1 and probably a slew of the Jesus stations are missing from the dial in Traverse City.
