Ron got one more memorial tribute in today's Detroit News.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sport ... 343029007/
And locally, Detroit mourned award-winning Detroit Free Press sports photographer Kirt Dozier (Jan. 5, at 65), who had also previously worked at The Detroit News, and outspoken TV and radio personality Ron Cameron (Feb. 20, at 79), whose career in the Detroit sports scene spanned four decades.
(The "four decades" part's a little off, but it's the thought that counts)

Sunday show memories

Wondering what would be the topics if Ron was doing a show today

The hot wings with the coaching change-what would Ron think

The Lions season the bye and his thoughts for next week

Rogers winning his arbitration case and next years goals?

Yeah, those wild-n-crazy Sunday morning roundtables followed by the three hour Sunday night show when all his regular guests were available, even Mark Wilson.

It's a shame Ron missed this upswing in Detroit sports.

It would've posed a problem for Ron. The consistent losing of Lions made his failure to ever step foot in Ford Field less of an issue. Same with his "ban" from Comerica. He was not happy with what Scott Harris was doing with the Tigers, not least of which was his not reaching out to Lance Parrish. And with the Pistons, Ron had settled into his belief that Cade Cunningham would never be a star in the NBA.

On the plus side, Ron's hour-long interviews with Paul Woods about the Red Wings would have had at least 20 minutes of new content (instead of about 10), before filling the rest of the hour with the standard "greatest thrill" type questions. :)

Also with the Lions, Ron seemed to take perverse pleasure in imitating Jim Brandstatter's "Here I am in the subdued Lions locker room" soliloquy after another loss. There was also Ron's standard start to his analysis of another Lions' loss: "They could have won, and they should have won, and they would have won, if only..."

I think I found out what happened to the Jumbotron TV that Ron made world-famous when he was staying at a hotel in Farmington Hills.

This picture appeared in the Detroit News yesterday, with this caption:
Uno Pizzeria & Grill in Farmington Hills in the Delta by Marriott hotel has a 152-inch screen to watch games on.
Image

The room that is pictured is the same room that I visited about three years ago (https://www.mibuzzboard.com/phpBB3/view ... 64#p695464). At the time, the Jumbotron had been temporarily removed.

The picture was in a News article about where to watch the Detroit Lions on Saturday night. Link: https://www.detroitnews.com/story/enter ... 581398007/

On what would have been Ron's 80th birthday, here are parodies of the theme songs of the Paul Henning trilogy of rural TV comedy shows from the 1960s.

(Beverly Hillbillies)

Come and listen to a story
'Bout a man named Ron
A poor Detroit boy,
Had some trouble gettin' on.
And then one day
While he's watchin' a ballgame,
A thought came to mind that would lead to greater fame.

Talk that is, TV, radio.

Well the first thing you know
Ol' Ron's a talk show host
A love for sports, he's said to have the most
Said, "Thinkin' big is the way I outta be,"
So he loaded up his notes
And he moved to 'XYZ.

Big audience, good time slot, lots of calls.

************

Well now it's time to say goodbye
To Ron and all his crew,
Ron hopes you didn't wish
That you had something else to do,
You're all invited back next week to this place on the dial
To have a heapin' helpin' of Ron's unique broadcast style.

Cameron that is, sit a spell, turn your mind off.

Y'all come back now, y'hear?

(Petticoat Junction)

Come listen to a show
That is hosted by a man
Named Ron Cameron

Forget The Ticket
It is time to relax
With Ron Cameron

Lots of ads, you bet!
Even more, than you'd expect
With Ron Cameron

(Listen to Cameron!)

There's a little station
With a weak signal
For Ron Cameron

(Listen to Cameron!)

It is run cheaply
Making dough from folks
Like Ron Cameron

(Listen to Cameron!)

And that's caller Kurt
He's got something more to blurt
To Ron Cameron

Listen to Cameron!

(Green Acres)*

Ron Cameron is the host for me,
Sports talkin' with some comedy,
Ads spreadin' out so far and wide,
Keep The Ticket,
Just give me some R Sizzle.

Elsewhere is where Ron'd rather be,
He gets so restless naturally,
He always gets dissatisfied,
The grass is greener
At someplace besides right here

Ron wants...
...Restaurant.
But wait...
...Not yet.

This is Ron's life
Of turmoil and strife,
Ron Cameron he is here.

Thanks. One of the fun things about doing these parodies is the wealth of source material and scenarios and ways of looking at things.

Thanks. I'd like to think that Ron's sales technique was a composite of Milburn Drysdale, Uncle Joe, and Mr. Haney.

One of Ron's old advertisers is for sale:

I remember when this store was the exclusive dealer for vintage copies of Ron's old publication, Sports Fans' Journal.

Great salute to CBS's "rural" comedies, Bobbert!
