CBS Detroit Future

Unread post by Fordfieldphotog »

The news product and on air talent is still worst in the market.
The sports reporter Rachel Hopmyer is so bad.
Will be interesting to see what happens to the stations when new ownership takes control in March.

I doubt Skydance will spend much more than current Paramount leadership on a floundering local news operation.

David Ellison's biggest interest is controlling the Hollywood film studio and the Paramount content library. My guess is the local TV properties will be treated as an afterthought with the possible exception of CBS O&O stations located in Top 10 ranked markets.

Good points. Sky dance could sell off a few low hanging stations to bring in money. I expect management changes and a lot of talent contracts are up in spring.

One thing I've noticed:
Fox 2, and especially WDIV & WXYZ promote their news product heavily during daytime, early access, and to some degree even in primetime. The promos at times tout upcoming feature stories.

62 runs only a couple canned promos for its news operations and does so sparingly. It is such a weak willed effort.

It's clear what's-her-face from Chicago views her channel 62 duties as an inconvenience & distraction from the work she truly cares about, namely running WBBM-TV in Chicago.

MW, I've often felt the same way about 62, especially when CBS has been carrying the Lions. Why would 62 NOT capitalize on such a large audience by promoting their news product?

We'll see if any promos air during this afternoon's game between DET and BUF.

Often, I've seen no news promos or only a single news promo (usually for NEXT Weather) during entire NFL or college football games I've watched this season on CBS.

I work here and my guess is they don’t invest anything during Lions games is because the sports reporter here is so bad. Also, the station has never really invested in sports. Last year when the Detroit Lions were in the playoffs they used to producers to cover the end of the season, one producer even appeared on air. It was a joke. Both of these guys , Dylan and Jose should’ve been fired a long time ago. I’m pretty confident CBS is still embarrassed with the Detroit station.

If corporate truly cared, improvements would have been made by now.

It appears to me budget cuts were made. There are fewer reporters / MMJs on the air now than before. I am seeing more national CBS content during local newscasts.

It is not the fault of the producers you named that the station was (and still is) inadequately staffed to cover major sports stories. They don't make the hiring decisions.

The Lions game is the perfect time to air news promos because of all of the eyeballs. A competent station manager would realize that. Product is so bad I still default to WTOL for CBS.

At the very start of halftime, 62 did run a very brief live tease for their newscast at 11. In the ensuing commercial break, I saw a 10 second spot for NEXT weather

In the first half of game action, though, I saw nothing.

The football game itself is a disaster. Lions are going to need a miracle to win.

The Lions came closer than I anticipated to getting the needed miracle. Game got interesting at the end!

Would love to see this matchup in Super Bowl.
Could Nexstar buy up the CBS O&O’s?
Read today’s FTVLive article. Bad news for Jennifer Lyons, who was pushed out at NN by Perry Sook because she failed there.

Nexstar would definitely scoop up the CW affiliates such as WKBD if regulations were to be loosened in their favor.

Looser regulations would also likely spur Skydance / Paramount to consider placing additional stations for sale.

I find it odd that much smaller Grand Rapids has had four semi-successful newsrooms for years while Detroit only has three decent newsrooms.

GR has a much larger geographical footprint. 3 targets Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, 13 is more of the north, leaving 8 and 17 for more of the whole market.

WKBD had a decent newsroom many years ago but WJBK flipping to FOX and moving newscasts up to 10 really hurt,
