Not sure what happened with your multi-layer post quoting, but it didn't format properly.

I’ve seen that issue off and on around here for a while. Usually it ends up with the reply inside the quote box.

That's due to user error.

Where would the error be if I hit the quote button and write fully below the quoted area and outside the box?

There would be no error unless your browser manipulated the bbc tags in some bizarre way.
