Bally Sport's and MLB

Unread post by Taco »

Where do you think the Detroit Tigers will go now that most MLB teams are finished with Bally Sports?
Woe to you, oh earth and sea
For the Devil sends the beast with wrath
Because he knows the time is short
Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast
For it is a human number
Its number is six hundred and sixty-six

Nowhere. They will stay with the newly named FanDuel Sports. That's my prediction and is also the prediction of several sports journalists.

I heard Bally was getting renamed but I was under the impression that all MLB teams were leaving other than the Atlanta Braves?

The pre-bankruptcy contracts were voided. The most likely outcome in the case of the Tigers and Wings is entry into a new broadcast rights agreement that isn't as financially onerous on Diamond Sports Group as the prior agreement.

The Ilitch Organization has no desire to get into the network television business. That would be waaaaay outside of their wheelhouse.

Here is the story from Tony Paul of the Detroit News. No changes, except for a logo, name change, and colors:

Wouldn't you know it. After complaining about how bad the Bally App was last hockey season, I finally get a Red Wings game on Disney and in addition to lower ESPN+ production quality...

The Tigers might have to go to MLB Network since the contract was voided, it may not be a Detroit decision anymore. The league hates Diamond Sports. The Red Wings will probably be in flux until the last minute.

CHSN has been such a disaster, Detroit could launch their own channel but getting a carriage agreement outside DirecTV and Fubo is quite difficult.

The article states that the Tigers aren't going to make that deal with MLB because Chris and the family also owns the Redwings. I think they will sign with Bally/FanDuel taking a pay cut which I think is what the Redwings did.

No. It will be Bally's Sports Detroit, which hasn't been seen on YTTV in several years, with new badging.

The network you described is a national network focused on horse racing and sports wagering talk, not a regional sports network.

oh CHSN has been HORRIFIC. The reaction of cable companies has been "yeah we're not picking up another fucking channel, the Hawks and Bulls and Sox suck anyway" and the teams have been like "uh, umm, it's available over the air on a subchannel of the Hammond infomercial station at least, just get an antenna or DirecTV!"

I saw a joke post with "hey, finally found a TV in Chicago that can show the Hawks game!" showing a picture of the scoreboard at the United Center

According to this article, many teams are still in limbo, including the Detroit Tigers.

They've got several months to negotiate a new contract before the 2025 exhibition schedule begins.

Scripps Sports is one alternative, with the games airing on TV20 and sub channels of Fox 47 and Fox 17. Scripps would likely subcontract out the production to a company like Program Productions in Chicago if in fact they were to outbid the revamped Ballys. Program Productions is producing the Pistons and Red Wings game broadcasts for Ballys Sports Detroit this season. The Illichs or Scripps could then stream the games for viewers in other Michigan markets.

Where is Scripps going to get the money to outbid Bally's? That's the central question, in my mind.

If Bally's isn't out of BK by spring training, then perhaps Scripps or some other alternative has a greater chance of happening.

People with summer homes in northern MI, some of which rely on internet speeds that aren't great for video streaming, are going to want access to telecasts.

The Tigers and Red Wings are the primary justifications for Bally's Sports Detroit's (soon to be FanDuel Sports Detroit) existence. If those teams bolt, the network almost assuredly fails. That's why I believe a compelling offer will be made to sign the Tigers and Wings to a new contract.

Might a small number of games be made available for free to entice viewers to sign up for a streaming or premium cable subscription to view all games? Perhaps.
