Landry, along with Bill Munson, quarterbacked the first Lions team I ever got excited about, that 10-4 team of 1970 which lost to Dallas 5-0 in the playoffs. Recent decedent Joe Schmidt coached that team. Until Stafford came along, and excepting Erik Kramer's one-off performance and Jon Kitna's "grit", the Lions hadn't had a decent QB since Landry.

"Galloping Gregory" suffered a series of knee injuries which stymied that part of his game; the Lions' fortunes were a series of ups and downs in subsequent seasons.

RIP

I was 11 years old back in late 1976 when I first watched the Lions on TV at the old Silverdome with either Landry or Gary Danielson on CBS (WWTV 9 in Cadillac) because WEYI 25 or WNEM 5 blocked it out because of poor sales.

Yes, I do recall Danielson having that one good season throwing to the likes of Freddie Scott.

Wow, pre-empting the Lions because of poor sales? Are you sure it wasn't because of league blackout rules at the time? The 80,000 seat Silverdome was a difficult sell-out.

Yes they did block games from TV for low ticket sales and it was the Lions that did that.

I'm pretty sure that was an NFL rule. It was something like 75 or 100 miles from the stadium.

So apparently the rule was put in place by the NFL in 1975 to increase ticket sales. They had to sell at least 85% of the tickets or it would be blacked out. Fortunately they got rid of it in 2014.
