The temperature range over the past 485 million years is between 46 and 97 degrees F with the vast majority over 52 degrees F. Per the chart below, the earth has spent 87 percent of its last half a billion years at or above 64 degrees F. That means our current 59 degree temperature is actually unusually cold on a large time scale.
So just to give you an idea of where we currently sit on that history:
No doubt we're warming at probably a faster rate than ever before which is a problem, but the earth has been much, MUCH hotter for a significant percentage of the time that multi-cellular life has existed on this planet.
American Council on Science and Health is a corporate front group
The American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) describes itself as a “pro-science consumer advocacy organization” and media outlets often quote the group as an independent science source; however, documents described in this fact sheet establish that ACSH is corporate front group that solicits money from tobacco, chemical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical companies and trade groups in exchange for conducting product-defense campaigns. The group does not disclose its funding.
In in that time frame earth has seen about a 100% turnover in life forms. Tortoises are among the oldest current life forms going back a mere 230 million years.
So the only point to be made here is life will go on long after humans are extinct.
re: Honeyman - that's not who published the study. That was actually Science (Journal) which Wikipedia describes as a "peer-reviewed academic journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and one of the world's top academic journals."
