Re: GM on track to be 100% EV by 2035
I'm considering a used electric for when my current gas "commuter" car meets the end. I would be interested in replacing the rest of my fleet with electric but too many uncertainties with range, access to charging/working charging, and cold weather performance to take that plunge at this time.
Re: GM on track to be 100% EV by 2035
Thread title is not accurate. Even Barra corrected it in the video, saying "our light-duty vehicles"

Thank God by 2035 I either won't be here anymore, or if I am, probably too old to drive. : )
Re: GM on track to be 100% EV by 2035
Great, their gas commercial products will continue. The title is accurate enough.

I'd get a Rivian in a heartbeat, but not until after they have stabilized their finances or merged into someone. Range and the other issues are resolved but need to be implemented. Tesla has solved the cold/range issue, but the others have to catch up.Graham Wellington wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2024 11:54 am I'm considering a used electric for when my current gas "commuter" car meets the end. Morgan Stanley downgraded Rivian Automotive (RIVN) to Equal Weight from Overweight with a price target of $13, down from $16. The firm believes Rivian's ability to drive competitive compute progress in a financially prudent way is limited.

Most of their commercial products are diesels codeveloped with International which is now a part of Volkswagen.
Vans and pickup trucks and what not are mainly light duty vehicles.

There should be hybrid options until 2050.

You sound like BMW.
It's a free market, Toyota has stated they are going to stick with Hybrid while they develop hydrogen propulsion.
Most companies will stick with EV.
I watched the last Grand Tour on prime this week. Jezzer said in an interview that he felt that there is no show with EV. Top Gear and GT were always about the sensation of engines, clutches and displacement. They are going the way of gas cars.

I just want a car that I can afford. Not to sound like TT, but the middle class cannot afford the setup involved for an EV station in their home nor the energy bill that comes with it. I support renewables including wind and solar big time, but the electric grid is not ready for every car owner to be on it.TC Talks wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2024 8:33 pmYou sound like BMW.

My son has charging stations at his apartment, costs about $35 a month, down from $150 a month for gas. To wire a house for EV cost me $450 (the price of a fluid service these days) it's just a 220v 50amp outlet. Remember; the only service an EV needs is tire rotation. The warranty is for 150k miles and they run smoothly to 300,000 miles.MotorCityRadioFreak wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2024 8:38 pm I just want a car that I can afford. 300,000 miles cost of ownership with a gas car is $35,000 for fuel and $20,000 for scheduled maintenance (fluids, brakes, tires, timing chain, water pump, belts, plugs etc), if the car can make it that long.
300,000 miles with a Tesla is $5000 for service (tire rotation and tire replacements), and energy is $9000(at .13 a kW)
EV isn't tremendously expensive to purchase these days. If you consider the costs saving with energy and maintenance, can you afford a gas car?

Re: GM on track to be 100% EV by 2035
Why does everybody act like every EV will be plugged in at the same time? If that were to happen it might be a problem but it wouldn’t ever be that way in the real world.

What?
EV's need charging about once every 4-7 days.

This idea that if we have all EV’s the grid will be overwhelmed and we will be in the dark ages again. Claims the grid can’t handle it. It’s like they think every car would be charging at once.

And the Haitians eat your pets. My dad was on the line at Buick plant 2 in Flint in 1953, he installed windshields. Buick was always cutting edge at GM. He wasn't married to the 1953 Buick, he knew what kept him working was the cutting edge part.Rate This wrote: ↑ This idea that if we have all EV’s the grid will be overwhelmed and we will be in the dark ages again. He's 90 this year. He has a modern iPhone, has been streaming for 4 years, and loves the idea of EV. When it comes to the capacity of the grid, his first thought was the gas crisis of the 1970's. "If they know it's a challenge before it's a crisis, industry will meet the need." Was his response to the pending grid dilemma.
My buddy sits on the T.C. light and power board. Not only do they know how much power they will need for EV's in 2035, they have the plan to add capacity. They also know how much additional profit they will earn. Anyone who thinks we will be in crisis doesn't understand how shareholder pressure impacts job security.
