Tom Jordan has left WJR

Unread post by radioandtventhusiast »

It hasn't been posted here yet, but Tom Jordan left WJR's mid-morning show All Talk last month and is going to do a new talk show over the internet and become a senior pastor. Kevin Dietz remains solo.

At what point does Cumulus throw in the towel on the all-local weekday lineup and switch back to syndicated Westwood One talk programs? Without any news department or meaningful Detroit play-by-play teams, I can't see this current format succeeding.

Good luck to Tom Jordan in his future endeavors.

Keven deitz solo? No thanks. They’d be better off playing old tapes of David Newman.

I would tune in every day to hear old tapes of David Newman. In my tens of thousands of hours listening to radio, he is/was second to none.

Marie Osborne has filled in with Dietz in the past because he can’t do a show solo. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the plan.

He did a podcast with Tudor Dixon the other day, in which he said WJR wants to abandon its right wing focus and reputation. Not a surprise, as they are at the bottom of the ratings. Not sure where they fit in in the landscape. Tom is a good guy, but sad to see him go down the rabbit hole.

David Newman was the best! Oh how far talk radio has fallen!

It always sounded to me like Tom and Kevin didn't really get along behind the scenes. I've always found Kevin's cartoonish voice to be rather grating. He's not going to be good solo, and Marie isn't a good match for a co-host (nothing against Marie... neither would anyone else)

As they say at 700 WLW in Cincinnati, "It's time for the dynamite" :lol hat tip to Gary Burbank.

Um, J.P. McCarthy?

I’ll pass on JP. In my mind, JP McCarthy seemed a bit too stuffy for me. He was comfort food-listening, in morning drive time, for our parents and grandparents.

He was always overly interested in the weather and up north lake conditions for his yacht. That and golf. Elitist stuff.

Made me feel creepy every time he called Judy coy, the syndicated weather expert, “judes”. Seemed insulting to me.
He really seemed to talk like a normal guy voice during the annual st Patrick’s day broadcast from a local pub.i think he was soft on the power figures of the day (Coleman young, etc) and in return they got air time on the great voice.

But I give him credit for being pro Detroit area.

I found guys like mark Scott (before the crazy health food and Kung fu stuff) and David Newman took on the issues full frontal.

But your mileage and preference may vary.

He has minimal views on his YouTube videos. Meaning zero income. What was he thinking?

This is a guy (a nice guy) who was making 150K-200K as morning anchor at WWJ. And similar if not more at WJR. He joins a long list of people who threw away good paying top flight anchor jobs to go down rabbit holes. Mind boggling.

When he was signing off on his last WJR show, he said he had become a Minister and had taken a job at a church. The youtube/podcast was more like a second job.

McCarthy had almost 1 in 4 Metro area adults listening. These other guys are pulling what? A 2 share. They are fringe players, No comparison.
