I'm not sure it's fair to call Carter a terrible president. He was an outsider.

I would argue Herbert Hoover was a much worse president than Carter. There are several others in the 1800s as well. Andrew Jackson would be another.

I lived through the Carter years. Only being able to get gas based on your license plate which was three days a week and ten gallon max and you better be in line by 5 am if you wanted your ten gallons. Gas stations closed Sunday and signs during the week on pumps out of gas. Ten percent interest rates on loans for good credit and no loans for anything less. Being on air with daily updates on the Iranian Hostage Crisis. Those are the things that stand out for me during his term in office.

Carter was definitely one of the three worst U.S. presidents of the 20th century. Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover were even worse.

Never indicted. Never convicted. Didn't drag his country into any wars. Didn't engage in a sex scandal with an intern in the White House. Didn't incite an insurrection. Didn't embarass his country every day with tweets. Didn't engage in illegal arms sales to an enemy of the US, to fund the interference in the affairs of a Central American nation. Didn't cozy up to foreign dictators.

Jimmy Carter was a good man at heart. I listen to his Crisis of Confidence speech at least once a month. The generational shift had taken over, and the WWII generation had passed the baton to the Boomers, who didn't wanna hear all that "sacrifice" and "do your part" bullshit. I listen to that speech because he was right. I realize how good I have it.

But the numbers don't lie. Mr. Carter indeed didn't have what it took to make it right. But that doesn't mean Reagan made everything alright for everyone, either. Look at us now.

Jimmy Carter did fuck up some things(think hostages and oil) but he also was a victim of wrong time, wrong place. Think about how sucky the big 3 was. "We will produce shit cars and rake in all the profit. Let's all send jobs overseas."
