If I can put on my "Cowboy" hat for a moment, Ron shared a death date with three famous journalists. Ron's style might be considered a mixture of their styles:
  • The "scoop" style of Walter Winchell (1972)
  • The freewheeling style of Hunter S. Thompson (2005)
  • The traditional style of Curt Gowdy (2006)

Looks like today the ever popular “Lindsay Renee is on and moved into Ron’s old time slot

Who can forget when Lindsey was working behind the scenes on Rons show and her fan base that is around the US called in on Rons show

Interesting that Ron & Walter WInchell have the same death dates. Winchell's career arc was one that would come to mind when thinking of Ron. Although Ron, obviously, never enjoyed Winchell's enormous career success, their later life trajectories had some parallels.
Larry King, who replaced Winchell at the Miami Herald, recalled:

He was so sad. You know what Winchell was doing at the end? Typing out mimeographed sheets with his column, handing them out on the corner. That's how sad he got. When he died, only one person came to his funeral: his daughter.

That day of far-flung callers reminded me of this call, never to be repeated.
Momo wrote: Fri Jul 31, 2020 12:54 pm David Shepherd from CBS Sports. He’s gotta be trolling, right. How would he know of Ron? Maybe from this board?
And speaking of out-of-state callers, how can we forget the once-regular calls from Rich from New York (who, as I recall, once played for frequent guest Bob Miller)? Rich would call asking only when the next game was for a particular Detroit sports team.

And for the record, I don't think Ron was gay. Or straight, for that matter.
You insisted you were fans, and now you admit you were laughing at him. What a shock...

I think that was a setup, with Lindsey coaching her callers to ask Ron "gotcha" questions.

A somber and wistful parody of "Abraham, Martin, and John"

Anybody here seen my old friend Alex?
He produced a lot of programs,
But he knew when to move on,
I just looked around, and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend Matt?
He tried to show some backbone,
Which really ticked off Ron,
I just looked around, and he's gone.

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
He called Ron a "crazy man,"
Which probably doomed his fate,
I just looked around, and he's gone.

Didn't you love the callers they let through?
Didn't they try to find some scores for you and me?
And they'll be free
Some day soon, with Ron a bad memory.

Anybody here seen my old friend Luke?
He's currently on the hot seat,
And we wish him best of luck,
But like the others, he'll be gone.
Some additional lyrics:

Anybody here seen my old friend Superfan?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He'd feed lotta people but it seems his buys would be unsung
You know I just looked around and he's gone

Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He kneed lotta people but it seems he stood by Ron
I just looked around and he's gone

Anybody here seen my old friend Ron?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He needed lotta people but it seems he could not bide his tongue
I just looked around and he's gone

Didn't you love the things that they misunderstood?
Didn't they try to find some guests for you and me?
And now we are at sea
Many days too soon, to our dismay

Anybody here seen my old friend Cowboy?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I heard him talkin' until he was stilled
With Superfan, Martin and Ron

That's really good, and captures the essence of the post-Ron era.

The line that really hits home is:
He needed lotta people but it seems he could not bide his tongue
I just looked around and he's gone

And the hits just keep on coming.

Nice to see this tune update Mo.
It has been so quiet around these parts since the initial “shock” wore off after Ron’s passing.
I am assuming that there is still no word on the circumstances of Scoops exit, and maybe he still lies unclaimed down at the Warren morgue?

Nothing more on this from Martin. Here are a couple of his recent posts:
Hi Friend,

I want to let you know that Ron Cameron does not have any fundraisers or gofundme accounts as of March 7, 2024

If someone asks for donations, please let me know.
What was your favorite commercial that Ron read on the air?
As to this latter post, I'm conflicted. Was it his Larry Flynt Gentleman's Club commercial, the soul food restaurant surprised to hear that they catered bar mitzvahs, or the French restaurant that served "day-old scallops"?

my most recent favorite was the foot doctor who offers painful, invasive procedures.

I am reminded of Casey Kasem's post-life family feuding and the trials of James Brown's body and descendants after he passed away.

Let there be peace and respectful treatment if Ron's status is still in limbo.
