Rock ‘n Stereo 101 WRIF
Rock ‘n Stereo 101 WRIF
What years did WRIF have the “Rock ‘n Stereo brand along with a handful of other ABC owned FM’s such as WDAI 94.7 in Chicago, WPLJ 95.5 in New York City and KLOS 95.5 in Los Angeles. I’m thinking it was 1973 to around 1977. Can anyone remember what other people besides Arthur Penhallow and Michael Collins that were at WRIF during the Rock ‘n Stereo era.

Maybe this will help you. WRIF, November 1971. I believe that is Jerry Lubin on the air.

Pants Galore? Tops Galore? I don't remember either of those. Detroit was kickass in 1971.

The original ABC FM AOR stations were:
WRIF
WDAI
WDVE
WPLJ
KLOS
KSFX
KAUM
Not sure if all used the Rock-n-stereo handle.

Shame something as cool sounding as Pants Galore isn't still around.

I remember Peaches Record Stores advertised on WABX and W4 in the mid 70’s along with Harmony House.

I was more interested in his sister, "Pussy Galore"......
Re: Rock ‘n Stereo 101 WRIF
I think the timeline for 101.1 FM went like this:
1948-1958: Both AM 1270 and 101 FM simulcasted ABC network variety programming. They were WXYZ radio.
1958-1966: The Top 40 phase was on both the AM & FM. They were known as Channel 1270.
1966-1967: The FCC simulcast law came into effect. WXYZ-FM had MOR music while Channel 1270 remained on the AM.
1967: This was the year that 1270 became Adult Contemporary. 101 WXYZ-FM likely became Boss 101 at that time. I cannot find any source on the internet that verifies this. I know that the AM had ABC network commitments to air shows that some of the people who worked there wanted to drop. I doubt that ABC had the same requirement for 101 FM. Unlike the former Channel 1270, Boss 101 was mostly Rock and Hard Rock with less Pop or Soul music than what the AM Top 40's played.
1969: WXYZ-FM was one of the ABC owned FM stations to air a prog rock network known as "Love".
Early 1971: WXYZ-FM was renamed WRIF.
Fall 1971: This is when Rock 'N Stereo began. The AOR format took off rapidly after that.
1976: After being a combo of Pop music and Rock, WRIF moved to playing mostly Rock by this time.
Mid 1990's: AOR made its transition over to Active Rock on most commercial radio stations including WRIF.

Any idea as to what The Boss 101 format was. Top 40? I do remember living in Fraser in 1970 and hearing Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused” for the first time on the radio inside of the A&P store at Utica Road and Grosbeck. The A&P had WRIF piped in all over the store that was my first exposure to Led Zeppelin. Those were cool days to be living.Marcus wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 12:24 amI think the timeline for 101.1 FM went like this:

What's the date of that article?
Worth discussing over on a Tech forum, not here, is the story down in the corner (would like to see the full article) about Magnetic Video's Variable Speech Control "Copycorder" device. Mag Video later become CBS/Fox Video, a large scale VHS format movie duplicator/distributor.
Re: Rock ‘n Stereo 101 WRIF
I found this article on a Livonia throwback website. No idea of the date.
