Bell Media shutting down some stations including CKWW.

Unread post by Steve79 »

Trying to figure out how to post a link here but it was just announced that Bell Media is eliminating jobs and shutting down many of its AM radio stations across the country. One on the chopping block is AM 580 CKWW. In the article it says that it will be sold to an interested party. Details still unfolding at this time.

580 can't cost much to run but then again brings in practically nothing. Who would buy it other than an ethnic or religious broadcaster?

580 is basically the only local terrestrial radio station I actually listen to for longer than 5 minutes. That sucks.

Same here. The exception would be the "Old School" Saturday night program on WMXD, with Gerald McBride. Maybe CKUE, CoOl FM, when I can hear it OTA.

Doubt it, especially since my take from the article is CHAM and CKOC Hamilton are part of this deal.

1290 doesn't run much local these days.

Yes, I know. I thought he may be the buyer, until I saw other stations included. Charlie has the "Big 8" website

Finally the chickens are coming home to roost Windsor radio is DOA. Suprised its only 580 on the block FMs are next. The fantasy world Bell and Blackburn are in is over. The once monopoly these guys think they had is withering away. The CRTC rules down in these parts wont work and makes Windsor radio uncompetitive

The BBM ratings are BS and have been for awile. No one is really listening to these stations and now with streaming and sat radio its even worse. You can only feed people crap for so long and when they find options its bye bye.

Detroit radio has long been an option but even that is being turned upside down.

The freemarket. and more better options always siphons the crap out.

Just my 2 cents as a lifelong Windsorite......

A side note......channel 9 might also come up for sale if the Conservative party keeps its promise to defund the state broadcaster the CBC if elected.......stay tuned.

It'd stink if CKWW shut down. It has the most diverse playlist of all stations, and it's the closest thing to what the Big 8 was. I hope someone who likes oldies like Charlie buys it and keeps the big 8 legacy alive.

When there was just CKWW-FM/CJOM/CIMX 88.7 and CKLW-FM....CIDR 93.9, the market was stable, AM and FM. All the new alternate channel drop ins in Canada, translators on the US side, and all the full power US FMs, make it impossible to compete now. Too bad, because CKWW has had a decent format, and one that still appeals to US listeners. The Canadian government treats Windsor Essex badly in some ways, like an errant English colony that must be made to tow the line, too cozy with the US, despite the obvious inseparable links between the two sides.

With what revenue? Radio is a business not a hobby.

The way it is worded it sounds like 1290 CJBK in London will simply go dark rather than being sold.

At least one of the Hamilton stations could become Ethnic. AM 580 in Windsor is hard to predict unless we find out who plans to buy them.

Would Corus be looking to expand? They do own some AMs around the country. Would they be over the limit in Hamilton?
