Z93
Re: Z93
Driving through the area yesterday afternoon, I gave gave the station a listen for about an hour (during one of their 93-minute commercial free music blocks). The playlist was mostly rhythmic-leaning outside of a 90s Green Day song (I didn't hear any of the Hot AC pop rock stuff that I see in the playlist posted a few months ago in this thread). Imaging says "90s until now" and I'd say that the bulk of what I heard was focused on the late 90s through the mid-2000s. Only maybe 1 in 5 songs were currents and I didn't hear much from the 2010s. Reminded me a bit of what 100.5 The Fox (in Saginaw) sounded like in the late 90s.
For what it is, it is programmed very well. Maybe a bit too "ghetto" for my tastes as I wouldn't mind hearing a bit more rock product from the era, but overall the playlist flowed well. Given the abysmal state of CHR today, I could see this format being tried elsewhere.

WWTV-FM/WKJF 92.9 had a fantastic signal from the WWTV Channel 9 tower, on the highest elevation point in the Lower Peninsula. For many years, it was 100 kW ERP H Polarization only from 900 feet HAAT. When they gave them a deadline in the 1980s to go above 300 meters HAAT, they moved up to 1020 feet HAAT H Polarization only to preserve its Class C status. If they had stayed there, and not gone above 450 meters HAAT, they would probably have been downgraded to Class C0. Of course, they squeezed in the 92.7 Charlotte to 92.9 Grand Ledge, on the old Olds tower, which now precludes it, and moved Cadillac 92.9 North, and is now a Class C1.
You could hear WWTV-FM/WKJF-FM for 150 miles or more on a fairly regular basis in many directions, before all the squeeze ins on cochannels and adjacents since the 1980s. Even in Northern Metro Detroit, before WDRQ 93.1 increased from 20 kW/500 feet on the WJBK-TV 2 tower, to 26.5 kW DA from 669 feet on the tower that Bob Liggett built near 10 Mile and Greenfield, you could hear it with a good receiver and antenna.

Re: Z93
Their target demo grew up on a CHR format that was mostly hip-hop and rhythmic pop with an occasional Nickelback or Creed song mixed in, especially from 2001 onward. The mix makes sense. Alanis Morissette and Hootie and the Blowfish don't gel with 50 Cent and Ja Rule. Even with a throwbacks-heavy playlist, Z93 sounds fresher to me than KHQ.
Re: Z93
There's plenty of rock-leaning pop stuff that would mix in fine. Doesn't have to be Nickelback or Creed either. Again, I give the playlist overall a thumbs up.
95.3 WCFX demonstrated today how NOT to mix in throwbacks into the playlist. I give the station a listen a few times a year when I'm in the listening area, and for the first time in 20 years, I heard a song from the 1980s - "Your Love" by the Outfield (1985) (it's the song that starts out "Josie's on a vacation far away" ) mixed in with mostly current rhythmic-leaning pop. That particular song stuck out like a sore thumb.

It is in TC, where the ad revenue resides. 30 somethings are very affluent here and this is what they listened to in College. Again, CHR sells cool to the middle aged. I was a fan of Run DMC in 1985, I'd say it's been too long for this extremely popular genre to be neglected.
