In this particular context, the immigration status was irrelevant and bringing it up was inappropriate.

As an aside, I've been calling out people on the right a lot lately. It would be nice if at least once in a while the leftists called out bad behavior on their own side.

I don't know, the fact that the shooter was an illegal alien who had been deported over five times and shouldn't have been in this country is a very pertinent fact to highlight the dangers of our lack of border enforcement.
New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.
