The Colonel has a point. Most of these freeways I never drove on for years but still knew the names. I must have learned them from traffic reports.

Interesting. I've never thought of Clinton in relation to Adrian but I suppose it makes sense.
Since I've lived in either Ypsilanti or Ann Arbor for most of my life to me its always been that cute little town 12 miles SE of Saline. :blink
That would be Milan. Clinton is southwest of Saline along US-12.
Full disclosure: I lived in Saline from 1998-2012.

Yes I did a typo on the SE, clearly should have been SW.

Are they piping in people from out of town? Tonight I heard a new voice, Joe something. He mispronounced Vernor and a road called "Hu-RON" I think. I'm guessing he meant Huron, but how do you mispronounce that, twice? He makes Jim Hughes look like KT.

As I recall. when I475 in the Flint area was first built, it was named after Walter Ruether also. After a while, the names came down; I don't recall hearing anything why.

In 1969 I-475 was designated the Buick Freeway and I-69 (then M-78) named the Chevrolet Freeway. In 1980 I-475 was renamed the UAW Freeway, and I-69 was renamed the Chevrolet-Buick Freeway. The latter name is still marked on a couple of those brown "point of interest" signs.

I think traffic reporters started calling highways by their official names to break up the monotony of saying a bunch of numbers jammed together for 60 seconds. But real people don't use those names. Imagine telling someone from out of town "take the Reuther to the Chrysler Freeway" etc. It would be tough,, since it seems most signs use numeric designations.

Depends on the freeway. I always use the name for the M-routes. I almost always say The Jeffries instead of 96 for the portion Livonia to Downtown. I usually say The Reuther instead of 696. I rarely say Chrysler/Fisher and I don’t think I’ve ever used any of 94’s names.

I refer to them all as "fucking".

As in: "Fucking 75 is backed up again"

Or

"Fucking 96 is under construction AGAIN"

or

"Fucking 94 is bumper to bumper for 4 miles"

Or "ugh...I hate fucking 275"
