Whitmer repeals right-to-work, reinstates prevailing wage in Michigan

Recently started a job making 22.55 an hour at Saralee frozen Bakery in Traverse City which is unionized.During a week long orientation,union reps said they negotiated a new contract with the plant that just kicked in on December 5th 2022.My questions are, will I have to eventually pay union dues or a fee? Join the Union itself?If so when and for possibly how much?or am I Grandfatherd in?

Looks like this new law takes effect on March 30Th 2024,,and yes I will have to pay union dues or a fee to stay employed.

With any luck, we'll have a constitutional amendment enshrining worker freedom (RTW) in the state constitution and you won't ever have to join IF you don't want to.

I would only support such an initiative if those opting out are 100% on their own with a different wage and benefits scheme from those paying into the union.

It would be awesome if they did that.

However, it would be immediately challenged by someone bringing it to the NLRB as a "union-busting" move, as many of the employees might opt for that option as they'd have more say over their own career and career growth. The only place it wouldn't is where neither of those exist.

I'm in agreement that if you work somewhere that has a union, you should join and get represented. And if you don't like it, organize a decertification vote.

Think about it.
Everyone that was forced to join is going to vote for it.
Those who have been members for years and think "What has my union ever done for ME personally?" will vote for it.
Members who see the union defend and bring back screw ups over and over again will vote for it.

Like Turkey has said Join and be vocal. Be a rabble rouser.

Funny video, but pretty spot-on.

I worked in a few companies that had "no-union" goals. They felt if the company was operating as expected, a union should not be necessary. We held regular management meetings to review this policy and also make all supervisors and managers aware of how to spot organizing activity. It was also pretty well-known that if there was organizing activity in YOUR area, then YOU weren't doing your job correctly and would probably be dismissed immediately. When any organizing activity was discovered, there would be a bunch of folks "swooping" into the area to figure out what was going on, and basically quell the activity. Usually it also resulted in at least a handful of folks getting dismissed too.

There were a few "union shops" that existing through acquisitions. These were all a PITFA to deal with. They'd always be the last to get any improvements because they were such a PITFA to deal with. Some went through decertifications and ended up joining the 21st century with the rest of the company.

It's too bad he didn't cover some of the negative aspects of a union shop. I did have to work in several of those (although not as part of the union) and got quite a few grievances filed against me, for silly things like picking up a box because it wasn't in my job description but it was in someone elses'.

Without giving too much away, where I work, we always refer to The Union as saying, " The U word" and when I first started, I got warned about using that word in front of certain people. It's really Orwellian to me.

Forcing people to do something they don't want to do is about as un-American as it gets.

You all should be able to join a union or not join a union voluntarily regardless of what your co-workers decide.

Why should unions get special privileges?
