WTAN Clearwater FL

Unread post by Turkeytop »

WTAN has an unusual business model. They don't produce any programs or run any ads. They sell blocks of time to individuals or organizations who want to broadcast their own program.

There are religious organizations, get rich quick scammers, health food cranks and conspiracy theorists.

During blocks of unsold time they just play recorded music. Music of Your Life standards. I tune in several times a day just for that.

It doesn't seem like a successful business model. I'm hearing more music all the time, even in the middle of the day.

They are on 1340 AM with 1 KW non-directional. They are also on 106,1 FM with 250 W. Right here, we're sort of at the fringe of their coverage area for both of them.

I do best on the AM with a directional loop antenna.

WTAN is the flagship of a three-station network in the Tampa Bay area, including WDCF 1350 (and 102.3 FM) Dade City, and WZHR 1400 (and 104.3 FM) Zephyrhills. At one point, they had an affiliate in Little Rock, Arkansas, KLRG 880.

Someone reported they had a problem viewing the message. I believe I've fixed it now.

WTAN's business model sounds similar to WSNR-AM 620, Jersey City, New Jersey. Evenings/overnights and weekends are mostly infomercials with a lot of Jewish programming. Any unsold blocks of time are reverted back to "Davidzon Radio" which airs Russian programming primarily weekdays from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
