The gun isn't the problem. Hate is the problem.
Re: The gun isn't the problem. Hate is the problem.
Here's the numbers going back to 1990. These are the number of school shootings per year in the US.

So I'll ask the two of you to exit the peanut gallery for just a minute and answer the question of why school shootings nearly quadroupled from the 1st decade of the 2000s to the 2nd decade? From 68 to 229.
And btw - you don't think that hate originates to some degree from what young, impressionable minds read online?

Here's a report how they have relaxed laws in Texas and it is easier to get a gun there now than it was in 2007:bmw wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 5:20 pmHere's the numbers going back to 1990. These are the number of school shootings per year in the US.

I'm guessing other red states are similar. Might help to explain the numbers on your charts.

1999 - I was at the tail end of my sophomore year in HS. After Columbine, we had to do school shooting drills. Fun times /sHoneyman wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 5:07 pmThat explains it! It was the iPhone!Lester The Nightfly wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 4:15 pmNope, it's the fucking iPhones. Don't you know there were never any mass shooting prior to smartphones? Even Charles Witman knows that...
However, I don't remember getting that breaking news in 1998 about Columbine on my phone.
Nah, I'm back to hate.

Here's my theory: anybody that would kill another person or people is mentally unhinged. That is indisputable. Also, making a weapon that can quickly cause mass casualties readily available is a problem. That is also indisputable.
The problem is that people are so entrenched in their sides view on the issue that even the phrase "common sense gun controls" means something different to everyone that heard it. We're never going to be in a place where the extremes on either side are going to be happy, so no real change is going to happen ever. The most we can do is make a concerted effort to be less shitty to others so they're not pushed over the edge to commit an atrocity.

One of the more brilliant things I've read in the past year or so.

Not really, Matt. Polls have shown that around 90% of the country wants background checks. That bill has passed the house. But the GOP's in the Senate won't vote for it. That would be a start...but pieces of human garbage like Ted Cruz just offer prayers while he accepts hundreds of thousands from NRA lobbyists.Matt wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 6:14 pm

Gun Violence. NY Times headlines, progressive politicians and numerous media outlets all talk about putting a stop to "Gun Violence."
I've been around guns pretty much my whole life. I've never seen one that is violent. People on the other hand have been increasingly prone to violence the past several years. Just compare the number of freeway shootings in the Detroit Metro area this past year to years prior.
I think we could stem the incidence of school shootings by looking into how the government run schools are failing our children. What was taking place in our educational system in 1965 that isn't taking place today? What is being focused on today that wasn't then? Sure would be nice if someone focused on that.

New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

If you see an obese person, I guess it could be a hormone imbalance or a glandular thing or an anti-immune disease.....but probably the fat fuck just eats too much.
Maybe...just maybe....it's the guns.

I'm definitely curious to compare red states to blue states. But that will take some time.Honeyman wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 5:50 pmHere's a report how they have relaxed laws in Texas and it is easier to get a gun there now than it was in 2007:

In the meantime, your theory isn't looking too good on first look.
Since the year 2000:
Texas - 24 school shootings (0.84 per million people)
California - 45 school shootings (1.15 per million peole)
And California literally has the strictest gun control laws of any state in the nation.
If it is the guns, how do you explain that one?
Re: The gun isn't the problem. Hate is the problem.
Finding humor in abortions and school shootings? WTF is wrong with you? And btw, even if it wasn't insensitive, comparing the laws regulating abortions to those regulating buying guns is such an absurd comparison to begin with. I'm sure YOU thought it was clever. Except it wasn't.
Re: The gun isn't the problem. Hate is the problem.
So we agree that women who decide to have abortions are mentally unhinged. Glad we agree on that point.
I agree to the extent that the ultimate goal is to keep mass-casualty-capable weapons out of the hands of people most likely to commit mass casualties. Problem is, (a) How do you identify who those people are, and (b) How do you go about actually keeping weapons out of their hands?
I'm all ears. As soon as somebody figures out how to pull this off, I'll be the first to sign on. Problem is, it is a pipe dream.
Re: The gun isn't the problem. Hate is the problem.
Due largely to our pathetic media and their bias, 90% of the country doesn't know that there already ARE background checks on most gun purchases.Honeyman wrote: ↑Wed May 25, 2022 6:29 pm

Re: The gun isn't the problem. Hate is the problem.
Australia confiscated 650,000 guns. Murders and suicides plummeted.
Firearm injuries tend to be more frequent in places where people have easy access to firearms
The US ratio of 120.5 firearms per 100 residents, up from 88 per 100 in 2011, far surpasses that of other countries around the world.
I think there is a case to be made that the gun IS the problem.

See, with very little help we can find common ground. And not a repeal, just a slight adjustment and clarification. Probably also need one on the church/state and privacy thing as well.

This article you linked is based on "age adjusted" statistics. I tried to Google that term to see just what that means. But only come up with other charts and graphs derived using the same term.
What does Age Adjusted mean in the context of this link?
Never really seen that term before.
Thanks.
