WJMN dumping CBS?

Starting on January 21, 2022, WJMN Local 3 will no longer be affiliated with CBS Network. This means CBS programs and sports are also moving.

WJMN will remain on channel 3 and will continue to provide the news, weather, sports and entertainment that we have for over 50 years across the Upper Peninsula.

In order to continue serving U.P. communities, we are expanding our Local 3 News programming. Starting on Friday, January 21, 2022 and continuing each week night, our 6 p.m. newscast expands from half an hour to a full hour. Our Local 3 late news is not only expanding to an hour, but will come to you an hour earlier at 10 p.m.

A very good question, I know this could be a LONG longshot, but could it wind up with MAYBE a digital channel say either with WBUP or WLUC ?

Here you go guys!! I was freaking out a bit too as that's a football channel. I sure hope they can fit it in HD with all of their SD subchannels there.

Two things baffle me about this: 1., by how sudden this situation is, and 2., why didn't WZMQ put CBS on the main channel and instead continue running Me TV on 19.1.

And their "LOCAL" news will be "farmed out" to Lily Broadcasting owned WSEE/WICU of Erie, Pennsylvania which already produces news for their "One Caribbean Television" network. And by the way CBS will be on WZMQ 19.2

The FCC changed the best TV stations for rural areas in hilly terrain, Channels 2-6, and replaced therm with UHF. If you look at the situations in hilly more rural areas, they require 2 or more translators to do what the Low VHF or even High VHF did by itself. WJMN was placed about half way between Escanaba and Marquette, a facility that was good enough on Physical Channel 3 for CBS to buy. Now it's a throw away. WGLQ 97.1 continues to be heard all over the place from that tower, 100+ miles on a fairly regular basis.

The FCC could have designed UHF channel bands, with relatively few channels, with buffer bands in between to eliminate the majority of the "taboos", and the buffer bands could be used for other services originally rather than have all this upheaval. The way I heard it, the FCC was put in charge of repurposing thousands of surplus Klystrons after WW II. UHF TV was the solution.

These network ideas come from executives in huqe cities with flat terrain near coasts and shorelines, or a huqe mountain nearby overlooking their cities to put TLs.

UHF can never get around hills mountains and other obstructions, buildings and trees, like VHF and especially Low VHF. YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE LAWS OF PHYSICS. Mr. Scott was absolutely right.

Plus, this still bugs me , Why did CBS give their affiliation to a station that has no physical studio ?

Another theory: CBS was fed up with the excessive airtime of commercials for the numerous regular/Native American casinos across the UP and northern Wisconsin, on top of the numerous online casino and sports betting ads that also air on every other station in Michigan, during local time during CBS Sports coverage on WJMN.

Also of note: the "must carry" status of stations apply only to the .1 feeds -- contractual negotiations must be made if cable systems wanted to carry the other subchannels from that station. Many already carry the .1s of WZMQ and WJMN, so they'll have to find space for 19.2 if they already don't carry it, and if they do, move it to the 2-13 range with the other networks.
