Ron Cameron
Re: Ron Cameron
Just finished listening to the the '77 & '78 broadcasts. Thanks again, wtf. This will be a goldmine for the 30 for 30 production.
I didn't know that Ron had a show on WMZK (in '77) before going to WXYZ. Although Ron's voice sounds very different, vintage Ron shares some things in common with the modern-day version. Both iterations were/are gaffe machines, whether screwing up ad copy, telling the correct time, or misidentifying the team/ title of his guest in both of these shows, Budd Lynch. When he took a call, he would - as now - identify himself before his guest. He had a 10-year old caller (perhaps a current caller?) whom, with no hint of irony (does Ron do irony?), he bid farewell by saying, "Thank you, sir, for the call." He also had a 76-year old caller (perhaps a current caller?). If Ron hangs on a bit longer, he could conceivably take calls from listeners born at least a century apart.
As for the differences, Budd made several references to dead Jack Adams, but Ron never told his dead Jack Adams story. Also, Ron had wall-to-wall callers then. And he let his guest talk without much interruption. And none of the constant stories about himself.
It was good to hear David Newman briefly discussing his upcoming show after Ron.

I enjoyed those shows. Thanks WTfdetroit. If you have more please post.I thought Ron did a good job on those shows.I remember listening to him back in the day and he was not the buffon he is today.
Re: Ron Cameron
Recent increased/out-of-the-ordinary working hours have taken me out of live listening to Scoop/RSizzle/The Elvis Of Sports Radio.
These after the fact play-by-play reports are often more entertaining that the live RC slog!
Thanks to all the contributors!

Re: Ron Cameron
Not to be churlish, but I don't know if these old shows reveal any loss of talent over the years. In both, Ron didn't have to do anything much beyond taking calls for his guest. He had the good sense then, at least, to let Budd Lynch do the talking. I'd like to hear a show from back in the day when he didn't have a guest, maybe took less calls, & had to carry the show mostly on his own (as he does now).

Re: Ron Cameron
No problem. I'm hoping Bobbert can upload his old Ronnie C shows.
Ron seems to be more professional compared to now but he has a pretty low bar. I would love to hear some shows where Cowboy called in as well as Kurt.

Re: Ron Cameron
Wtf those are fantastic finds. I listened to the '78 one. What a blast from the past, the show is just buzzing with callers like rapid fire and Ron is letting the guest talk. Wow, great stuff and to hear the voice of Dr. Sonya Freidman and David Newman, those were some great days in Detroit radio, and the call to cash, listening to Ron call a radio listener for a chance to win $795. Thanks Mr. Positive for trying to get us some answers and the nice little plug for your place on 7 and Middlebelt. Where did you find this stuff?
Re: Ron Cameron
As this 5/7/79 Joe Lapointe column details, one of Ron's cash calls went terribly wrong:Mr.Transistor wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 8:51 pm Wtf those are fantastic finds. I listened to the '78 one. I may have to venture out to the GNC store there one of these days in hopes of getting an audience with the legendary Mr. Positive.Mr.Transistor wrote: ↑Sun Dec 13, 2020 8:51 pm Thanks Mr. Positive for trying to get us some answers and the nice little plug for your place on 7 and Middlebelt. Re: Ron Cameron
Pardon me, where did you get the 77-78 WXYZ broadcasts? I'd love to hear them. It's my favorite era on radio, especially WXYZ!
Re: Ron Cameron
They can be found on the Detroit motor city radio flashback site

Re: Ron Cameron
I love Ron's bio that is still up on the Patriot website. It clearly looks like Ron wrote it with the "has owned restaurants" tidbit

Re: Ron Cameron
Mr Positive needs to bring up the old interviews on the buzzboard from 1977 and 1978 and if he has heard them. The buzz board is craving more old tapes.
Re: Ron Cameron
On the all request line, Mr. Positive, anticipating Saturday’s scheduled guest, should make note of Ray Scott’s many previous appearances & ask Ron what interesting new ground he intends to tread in yet another interview.
