CKLW-FM/CIDR's Original Transmitter Site
CKLW-FM/CIDR's Original Transmitter Site
Where in Windsor was the Canada Trust Building located, where CKLW-FM/CIDR's original Transmitter Site was atop of, from the time CKLW-FM had gone on the air in 1948; up until 1963, when CKLW-FM had increased its ERP from 250 Watts to 50 Kilowatts?
Re: CKLW-FM/CIDR's Original Transmitter Site
Well, there's no FCC History Card, so the technical details are sketchy. But there's this.

It doesn't show TL location changes that I can find. If there were a good guess, it might be when they went from 250 watts to 50000 watts ERP. But it doesn't show the studio locations either. When they went to Riverside Dr. with CKLW-TV 9 and RKO General ownership, that might be a good guess. Perhaps the CBET History has more clues.
No more clues that I can find.

When Bill Dulmage started the site, there were a lot more technical details as I recall.
I guess we could go to americanradiohistory.com, Broadcasting Yearbooks year by year, etc., for more information.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Re: CKLW-FM/CIDR's Original Transmitter Site
I can tell you that by about 1964 or 1965, they must have been 50000 watts, because I heard it soon in Genesee County soon after getting an outdoor turnstile antenna on a tower. I doubt if I could have heard it on my setup, antenna and receiver, at the time, with 250 watts. Many Summer mornings, 500000 watt WJFM 93.7 would capture it. Nearby WJR-FM 96.3 came in at close to the same strength, from the Fisher Building.

The Canada Trust Building is now the Metropolitan Building. It was built sometime in 1929 and is still around, sitting at 176 University Street West (at the NE corner of the intersection with Victoria Avenue).

Don't know if this will help readers - or totally mislead them, but I do remember that downtown Windsor had a skyscraper hotel called the Viscount, that only lasted a few years.
It did have a lighted tower on its top, which may have held the antenna of either CKWW-FM (88.7) or perhaps CKLW-FM (93.9).

You are correct about CKWW-FM. On top of the studio building.innate-in-you wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 8:03 pmDon't know if this will help readers - or totally mislead them, but I do remember that downtown Windsor had a skyscraper hotel called the Viscount, that only lasted a few years.

1967
Radio Windsor Canadian Ltd. (Geoff Stirling) opened CKWW-FM 88.7 MHz. Studios and offices were co-located with CKWW-AM on the top floor of the new 19 story Viscount Towers at 1150 Ouellette Avenue in downtown Windsor. CKWW-FM operated with an effective radiated power of 84,000 watts from a 269 foot tower located atop the studio building. A new circular polarized antenna was used, making CKWW-FM only the second station in North America to use this type of system. The station operated with a “Good Music” format and was on the air 24 hours a day.

Strangely enough, there seems to be more technical information about 88.7 than 93.9. The CIDR 93.9 History appears to have been edited by someone who found technical details boring. Their math coprocessor must have been disabled like a slow 486-SX.
