Still sad to see and what an embarrassment for a great sports city like Detroit to have one mediocre sports station that I for one haven’t listened to in 2 years. I’m curious if we will ever get a decent sports station here but either way I’m fine with my great podcasts I listen to.
What makes a "Great Sports Station" you seek, why is 97.1 sub-standard?
Why I dont listen to 97.1 is a few reasons:

1. I hate the "caller driven" format. I really dont care what Joe in Southfield thinks about the Lions defensive scheme or why Stafford sucks. I prefer to hear insiders, former players or coaches to be interviewed.

2. I also dont like the "what is your favorite horror movie" type topics that 97.1 did. Sorry i'm in the minority I guess of wanting sports talk on a sports station.

3. The negativity is annoying. Look 2015-present has been a disaster for our teams here but even before that they were so negative.

4. Finally Valenti's shtick got old to me and how he's the best sports host we have in Detroit doesnt really say a lot considering allegedly he failed his auditions in New York and Philly.

So hopefully I cleared up why I haven't listened to 97.1 in a couple years but hey if you like it more power to you. It just isnt for me.

Any of you young whippersnappers who believe this is anything close to resembling an "original idea" by IHR, do not know your history:

I wonder if 1130's 10 loyal listeners will notice it gone.

Diversity in radio is a great thing, but this smells like more fake 'woke' pandering. But WDFN has been a dead stick for a decade what do they have to lose?

I'd rather see a local legit minority broadcaster turn this into a station targeting Detroit's African American community.

WDFN has been in a coma for like 11 years. So RIP. As far as 97.1 goes, they talk Lions way too much for a team that continually sucks and lets everyone down- overkill on Lions. Talk politics too much, if I want to listen to politics, I'll tune into a political talk station, and topics not even related to sports. It's tough to talk sports 24/7 but these guys for the most part are uninteresting. Jame and Stoney think they are hilarious and quite frankly they are not. They blow. Valenti is alright gives it to his own team Sparty but his ridicules towards U-M fan really alienates his so called audience. Caputo is very knowledgeable when it comes to hockey, baseball, and football, sometimes talks politics too much however. IMO he's the best one they got.

I don’t listen to AM radio it’s like hearing your electric razor in the background like really loud. Have fun listening to BIN 1130 with an electric razor noise. Have fun doing that.

Nine dead sticks, to be exact.

With IHR, this is the radio equivalent of saying "Some of my best friends are black" :lol

Where will Warren Pierce go now? WPON? WCAR perhaps?

Mentioning how 1130 used to be the leader of sports talk in Detroit, but had its slow downfall starting on Obama's Inauguration day in 2009 when most of the local hosts were fired. I'll have to stream it on the internet to see what I think of the new format.
WDFN's future was sealed the moment Star 97 flipped to sports and got the Tigers schedule.

No other format is more biased against AM radio than Whites 45 and older.

Star 97 was long gone. It was after WKRK, a/k/a K-Rock, Extreme Radio, Free FM, 97-1 FM Talk, etc etc.

The Ticket and The Fan

Unread post by Deleted User 14896 »

I'm not going to quote anyone. Just say how I feel in response to a few of the post in this thread.

For me, The Fan sucked when everyone on there talked at once. You always had at least 3 people all talking at the same time. Both the host, the intern, the producer, the UPS guy walking down the hallway. Twice as many if it was "shift change". Always gave me a headache and change the station.

And I agree the topic on the Ticket should be just sports. Yeah, pro sports are thin right now.
But what would it take to talk about what's going on with the Mud Hens? Or the Spitfires?
Would people be interested in some blab about what's up and coming and promising at the farm?
Or some other local college teams beside Michigan and Michigan State?
Woody Woodriffe isn't shy about talking about college ball at other schools.

But there's a simple reason why the cast of characters on 97.1 won't make the effort . It would take a bit of work, a bit of grunt, a bit of homework. Heaven forbid the folks on the Ticket do something other than re-read what they see on social media. Is that not their basic M.O. every day?

Actually I’ve been listening and not too bad. Might set my preset to 1160.

Absolutely not. It might be looted if Flint has a riot, if you can call that progress.
