Found this site dedicated to the glory days of New York's WOR-FM (and later WXLO) during the RKO era of the 1960's and 70's:

Plenty of great airchecks starting when WOR-FM broke simulcast with WOR-AM in 1966. It's interesting to hear what qualified as a "Progressive Rock" format in the era. They later switched to the Bill Drake Top 40 format ala KHJ and CKLW (also RKO stations at the time).
Acceptable registrations in the queue through June 3 at 5:00p ET have now been activated. Enjoy! -M.W.

Re: Classic WOR-FM
By late 1972 Drake's consulting contract was up and the station would become WXLO, later branded as 99X. Top 40, but with a looser approach than tightly-structured Drake format. Of course Bill Drake would go on to found Drake-Chenault and market his "more music" concept to automated stations via the XT40 and Contempo300 formats.
Shortwave is the ORIGINAL satellite radio.
